Why We Love This Hotel

  • Eastwood Hall is set in extensive parkland grounds on the edge of Eastwood, a former coal-mining town
  • DH Lawrence was born in the town, and there is a museum dedicated to him nearby
  • The hotel is built around a Grade II-listed Georgian manor house

Overview

Eastwood Hall sits in 26 acres of private grounds, 30 minutes' drive from Nottingham city centre. At the centre of the hotel is a Georgian manor house (pictured), which was built as a family home around 1810 and was later used by British Coal as a regional office. Today the manor is a wedding and conference venue, and bedrooms are in a modern annex at the back of the hotel complex.

The property is on the edge of Eastwood, a former mining town bordered by farms and countryside. The DH Lawrence Birthplace Museum (open 10am-4pm Tuesday-Saturday) is the author's childhood home and is a 10-minute walk away; you can learn how growing up in Eastwood influenced his controversial writing. The Blue Line Trail is a walk that links all of the Lawrence-related sights nearby.

Beauvale Priory and Felley Priory are around 10 minutes' drive away; both have quaint tea rooms that serve homemade cakes and light lunches. The Derwent Valley Heritage Way is a 55-mile-long footpath that runs through the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site. It passes a series of 18th- and 19th-century mill complexes and the watercourses that powered them, and can be reached from Belper or Duffied, which are both less than 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. Wollaton Hall, Papplewick Hall and Thrumpton Hall stately homes can all be reached within 30 minutes, and Sherwood Forest -- of Robin Hood fame -- is 45 minutes' drive away.

The hotel has a restaurant and a bar. Leisure facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a gym, a steam room, a beauty salon and an outdoor tennis court. All 150 bedrooms are in a contemporary annex, and are decorated in neutral tones.

Breakfast had good selection of fruit and items to toast.

I emailed the hotel twice prior to arrival, one to request room with nice view (this was also requested on booking) and book table in the restaurant and second to ask if any nice walks plus areas of interest near hotel. I never received a reply to either which was very disappointing and ignorant. On check in I mentioned about emails with no reply and also that I had stayed at the hotel before which were not acknowledged at all. Even though told room had nice view it was on ground floor looking out onto a grass slope! Evening meal menu had no fish dish bearing in mind it was Good Friday! Travel zoo deal stated 3 courses off a la carte menu when mentioned to our waiter he then brought that over. At breakfast not eating meat I asked waitress could I order an omelette. After at least 15 minutes I chased it up when it finally arrived it looked like it had been thrown on the plate. At checking out the receptionist was talking on her mobile phone, I whispered that I wanted to check out she continued to talk on her phone and gave me a hand gesture to say nothing was to pay. This was extremely rude having not bothered to ask how my stay was or even to welcome me back to the hotel again. Disappointing stay to say the least after very much looking forward to it.

The stay was nice but it’s pretty misleading. You assume you’re going to be staying in the nice hall that’s advertised. Also the food was not up to standard. The room was good at least.

Big tv and spacious rooms. Breakfast was nice although granola tasted stale and things weren't replenished. Big queues at coffee machine as they only turned one on.

Breakfast was nice although granola tasted stale and things weren't replenished. Big queues at coffee machine as they only turned one on. Very disappointed with the children's timings for swimming. Hardly allowed at all even though there were no other activities on in the pool. Because the children's hour (8.30-9.30) clashed with breakfast timings there was even less time for them. Staff, especially at breakfast time, were very miserable
