Stanwell House Hotel is an 18th-century former finishing school set on Lymington's high street, half a mile from the New Forest National Park. The town has a wealth of history -- it was once a honeypot for smugglers looking to hoard contraband in nearby caves, and its Saturday market has been running for over 765 years. Today, there's a multitude of white masts in the marina, and the "utterly quaint" (Lonely Planet) cobbled lanes are lined with independent shops.

The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, which has a collection of 250 vehicles, is a 15-minute drive away; Buckler's Hard Maritime Museum is 10 minutes' drive from there. Southampton and Lyndhurst are within 30 minutes' drive of the hotel.

The 2-AA-Rosette bistro restaurant serves contemporary European fare, made using local produce delivered daily. You can dine al fresco on the terrace or in the "intimate" (The AA) refurbished Burcher & Co restaurant. The Drydock bar offers 25 different gins and a selection of wines, and there's also a cocktail and malt whisky menu.

Georgian rooms are on the second and third floors, in the oldest part of the property, while Garden rooms are more contemporary and are on the ground and first floors. Dogs can stay in some ground-floor Garden rooms for an extra £15 per dog, per night.

Bit disappointed that we upgraded to a suite but that our suite was on the main road so the traffic noise was disturbing

A calm oasis right in the hight street
Other Comments
The bedroom overall was good, just poor water pressure for the bath and shower let it down. However, the evening meal left a lot to be desired - overcooked and tasteless whitebait and frozen solid parfait pudding. Car park is a bit bizarre too!

Situation central to the town. The food in the restaurant was lovely although not sure I would have used it without the discount included in the travel zoo offer.

A negative point bedding needed to fit the mattress better. Not wide enough. Also final bill didn't include travel zoo offer price and my address completely incorrect.

Unfortunately the room telephone was out of action the whole 3 days we stayed and reception didn't answer my calls to them via my mobile so I had to treck along to reception to order a room-service meal.

My only small critiscm is that the fire door opposite room 22 bangs on shutting , can be rather annoying in the "early hours ". Everything else was perfect .
