Overview

East Sussex National, which holds four AA Silver Stars, is around 10 minutes' drive from the South Downs National Park (an International Dark Sky Reserve) and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making the hotel a great base from which to explore their rolling hills and bustling market towns.

There are plenty of sites for history buffs to explore. In Lewes, which is 15 minutes' drive away, there is a ruinous Norman castle and a priory, as well as a Tudor house that belonged to Anne of Cleves. Battle, where the Battle of Hastings took place in 1066, is around 40 minutes' drive away, as is Brighton.

The Pavilion Restaurant has two AA Rosettes and serves a collection of dishes prepared with ingredients sourced from local suppliers. The Hunningtons Restaurant and Ryder Bar & Terrace is in the golf club house and serves traditional home cooking, light lunches and sandwiches. The Sussex Lounge has outdoor seating in the gardens or on the balcony terrace.

The health club offers aerobics classes (supplements apply) and its facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a spa pool, a sauna, a steam room and a gym. Horsted Spa has an aromatherapy room, a monsoon shower, a Jacuzzi, a steam room, a sauna and a relaxation room. Massages and exfoliation treatments are available at a supplement, but there is limited availability in the spa on weekends and treatments should be pre-booked. There are also two golf courses: the East Course and West Course.

Club Rooms have free Wi-Fi and private balconies overlooking the golf course.

There was bad and good during the stay. The room was fine but had not been properly serviced (half drunk bottle of water, torn pillowslip, towels for one person not 2, dirty net curtains). This was put right eventually. The reception girls were lovely and the food was unexpectedly excellent. There was however a particularly rude, surly and unhelpful member of staff in the bar area, which meant that we did not extend our stay as we had planned to perhaps do. It was a very offputting experience. Servicing of rooms needs more attention. Plus side, great shower and lovely view from room. But some staff let it down. Also the steam room and sauna which I had particularly wanted to go to were shut without warning.
