Why We Love It

  • This is a "traditional" (The AA) Lake District property 5 minutes' walk from the water's edge
  • It's set in 20 acres of landscaped gardens & mature woodland
  • The AA calls dinner in the award-winning restaurants "a highlight of any stay"
  • This year marks the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter's birth, & there's plenty to do

Built in 1812 from stone quarried in the hotel grounds, Merewood Country House Hotel is a traditional property with an enviable location. The hotel is set in woodland that's roamed by red deer and noted for its multi-trunked chestnut tree.

Brockhole on Windermere and the shores of the lake are a 5-minute walk away. You can wander freely through the nature reserve, see the manor house, join a treetop trek and hire bikes and boats (charges apply for activities and parking). Windermere town is a 5-minute drive away and Bowness-on-Windermere is a few minutes further, and is known for its winding streets and cruise boats chugging across the lake.

July 2016 marks 150 years since Beatrix Potter's birth, and there are various events to celebrate. Hill Top -- Potter's former home, where Jemima Puddleduck and Tom Kitten were brought to life -- is hosting evening tours of the house on 1 September and 6 October, and garden tours on 18 September and 16 October. The Beatrix Potter Gallery at Hawkshead is showcasing her original artwork until 22 September, and all these events are within a 20-minute drive of the hotel. The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction is 10 minutes' drive away.

The hotel has ornate wood panelling, original fireplaces and stained-glass windows. There are two AA-Rosette-awarded dining rooms, and some bedrooms have views of the lake. Dogs can stay for an extra £20 per dog, per stay, and are greeted with treats and blankets.

We were a little disappointed with the customer service, we arrived about 2 hours too early for check in due to traffic being better than expected and we weren't told when our room was ready- we waited around until 2.50pm, we weren't offered a hot drink and were directed to the bar. The TV didn't work very well it seemed to required re-tuning but the options wouldn't allow manual re-tuning. If it hadn't been able to connect to the internet we would have had very limited viewing options that night. We alerted a staff member and she said someone would be up to inspect (this was 10.20 at night!) Nobody came and we didn't wait up for them. Upon checkout the supervisor knew nothing of our problem. I appreciate we stayed on a voucher but it would have been nice to be made to feel as special as the surroundings. It all seemed a little unorganised and not reflective of what I expected given this was treat for my partner.

A beautiful old hotel set in amazing gardens with spectacular views over Lake Windermere. We had a warm welcome from the excellent Duty Manager Tom and were impresssed with all the staff we encountered. The hotel was sympathetically decorated with antiques and was spotlessly clean; our bathroom positively shone! We had a truly delicious dinner in the charming Dining Room and a very good breakfast, with locally sourced produce. A memorable stay - we will return!
