Hotel La Margherita - Villa Giuseppina is a traditional property surrounded by chestnut trees on a hillside above the Amalfi Coast. It is on the outskirts of Scala, a quiet village that is "a real little charmer", according to Condé Nast Traveller, with a 12th-century duomo and old palazzi.

The hotel is a 10-minute drive down winding lanes from "ravishing" Ravello, known for its "shady gardens, quiet lanes and sense of faded grandeur" (The Guardian). This mountain town was favoured by Wagner, Virginia Woolf and DH Lawrence, and offers excellent views over the Bay of Salerno. It is home to "truly magnificent" gardens (Lonely Planet) at the Villa Rufolo, which are "packed with exotic colours, artistically crumbling towers and luxurious blooms". The busy coastal town of Amalfi is around 15 minutes' drive away. From here, you can take a boat trip or bus tour to the Grotta dello Smeraldo, an emerald cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites -- Fodor's says the light is best from 12-3pm.

The hotel has an outdoor swimming pool and terrace. The on-site restaurant serves traditional dishes made with local ingredients, and there's also a bar with excellent views across the wooded hillsides and down to the sea. Free Wi-Fi is available in public areas.

All rooms have a terrace or balcony and air conditioning.

Travelzoo tip: Head to Ravello on Tuesday morning to check out the food, wine and clothes at the lively market in the Piazza Duomo.

Thankfully had a car to get from Naples airport and to Ravello across the gorge, but don’t even think about taking a car down to Amalfi or anywhere along the coast, (seriously hazardous) Take the bus from Scalia and ferries instead. Hotel staff were charming, food fair, pool fine though sun beds in poor state of repair

Rooms could do with a little updating, working fridge etc

I wrote a detailed review on Trip Advisor. The room was disappointing, our girls were in a separate building and though we asked to switch several times management did help, even though new guests kept arriving and being given new rooms. Had dinner in restaurant and weren’t told at time of ordering that part of a dish not available or arrived lukewarm for my other daughter. Overheard staff having disagreements about things a few times. All added up to a far from brilliant holiday in stark contrast to our first visit there.

We loved the personal touch of the owner at the hotel. She was very hands-on and greeted us on arrival. We had the opportunity to have lunch even though the restaurant was closed. The food was amazing! So authentic. The hotel was very rural you would need to rent a car to stay there, but we would fully recommend doing this because we got the opportunity to really enjoy the views and visit the small villages along the coastline.

We stayed at Hotel La Margherita which is a short walk from Villa Giuseppina, for us this was great as we were close enough to the facilities at Villa Giuseppina but able to enjoy the peace and homely feel of La Margherita. The rooms were clean and the views were incredible. The breakfast was lovely (again stunning views from the breakfast room!) and the hosts were lovely. The pool, bar and restaurant facilities at Villa Giuseppina were also great with more amazing views! Overall we loved our stay and found it fantastic value for money.

The Hotel is away from the hustle and bustle of Ravello but within easy reach and offers great views. The 2 buildings are a 5 - 10 minute walk from each other with the pool and restaurant being at Villa Giueseppina (limited breakfast available at both). There are not many restaurants in the area but we ate at Villa Giuesppina most nights and enjoyed good reasonably priced food with great views of Ravello. Walked into Amalfi and Atrani from the hotel and much preferred the quieter more relaxed Atrani. Buses easily available for the journey back. Hotel Margarita is a little dated but provides simple Italian charm with friendly helpful staff.

The staff were absolutely lovely and couldn’t do any more for us! The room was clean and well kept the whole time for us, would definitely return for a long weekend in the future! Thank you for such a lovely stay!
