Hotel Grande Bretagne, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens is a historic property in the city centre, which offers "old-fashioned romance and contemporary comforts", says The Daily Telegraph. The Neoclassical building dates back to the 19th century, and interiors feature plenty of marble, gilt and antiques.
The hotel is right in the heart of the city, opposite the Greek Parliament on Syntagma Square. The Acropolis Museum, Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Arch of Hadrian are 10 minutes' walk from the hotel, and the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the Agora are around 20 minutes' walk away.
There's a rooftop pool with views over Lycabettus Hill (open May-October). You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner at the adjoining GB Roof Garden restaurant, which offers Mediterranean fine dining, while the Winter Garden in the lobby is a good option for light meals and afternoon tea. The hotel has a spa, which offers an indoor pool, a sauna and a steam bath, and guests get free access. The fitness centre is open 24 hours a day.
Guest rooms are furnished with antiques in opulent style. Better rooms have Acropolis views, and you can opt for a suite or a room on the sixth or seventh floors for 24-hour butler service. Standard Wi-Fi is free, and a high-speed connection is available for a fee.
