Why We Love This Hotel

  • Riverdale Hall Hotel is a Victorian mansion in rural Northumberland, on the edge of the national park
  • The hotel and lounge bar have views of the River North Tyne
  • There is an indoor swimming pool and a sauna
  • Hadrian's Wall and the Kielder Observatory are both within 35 minutes' drive of the hotel

Overview

Built in 1866 and later used as a shooting lodge, Riverdale Hall Hotel is in rural Northumberland. It's a short riverside walk from the market town of Bellingham, a well-known stop on the Pennine Way. There are long walks that start and finish at Bellingham, making it the perfect place for a restorative cup of tea and cake (or a celebratory pint).

Northumberland National Park -- a "natural wonderland", according to Lonely Planet -- is a short drive away. Kielder Water and Forest Park, home to Northern Europe's largest artificial lake and England's largest forest, is around 25 minutes' drive away.

Hexham Abbey, in the market town of Hexham, and Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are both within 35 minutes' drive of the hotel. Cragside, the first house in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity, is 45 minutes' drive away; this National Trust property was described as "a wonder of its age" by Jeremy Paxman in his book The Victorians.

The hotel restaurant serves dishes made with local produce such as lamb, game and cheeses. There is also a lounge with views of the River North Tyne, and a bar with open fires.

Facilities at the hotel include an indoor swimming pool and a sauna. You can also play on the hotel's cricket field or on the 18-hole golf course (fees apply). The hotel can help you to arrange mountain biking, canoeing, sailing or waterskiing in the area.

The River North Tyne, which runs by the hotel, is known for its salmon and trout, and guests can hire fishing equipment at an additional cost.

Rooms have free Wi-Fi. Superior rooms are generally south-facing, with views across the grounds towards the river. Some have balconies and small patio areas.

Warm welcome. Lovely food

Our room was lovely, but the hotel was a bit shabby in places. Dining room good, bar area could be improved, but would certainly go there again.

Food-but expensive
Other Comments
Hotel itself and grounds in need of urgent attention as it is very "tired". We were in "superior" room but nothing superior about it
