Why We Love This Hotel

  • Riverdale Hall Hotel is a Victorian mansion in rural Northumberland, on the edge of the national park
  • The hotel and lounge bar have views of the River North Tyne
  • There is an indoor swimming pool and a sauna
  • Hadrian's Wall and the Kielder Observatory are both within 35 minutes' drive of the hotel

Built in 1866 and later used as a shooting lodge, Riverdale Hall Hotel is in rural Northumberland. It's a short riverside walk from the market town of Bellingham, a well-known stop on the Pennine Way. There are long walks that start and finish at Bellingham, making it the perfect place for a restorative cup of tea and cake (or a celebratory pint).

Northumberland National Park -- a "natural wonderland", according to Lonely Planet -- is a short drive away. Kielder Water and Forest Park, home to Northern Europe's largest artificial lake and England's largest forest, is around 25 minutes' drive away.

Hexham Abbey, in the market town of Hexham, and Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are both within 35 minutes' drive of the hotel. Cragside, the first house in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity, is 45 minutes' drive away; this National Trust property was described as "a wonder of its age" by Jeremy Paxman in his book The Victorians.

The hotel restaurant serves dishes made with local produce such as lamb, game and cheeses. There is also a lounge with views of the River North Tyne, and a bar with open fires.

Facilities at the hotel include an indoor swimming pool and a sauna. You can also play on the hotel's cricket field or on the 18-hole golf course (fees apply). The hotel can help you to arrange mountain biking, canoeing, sailing or waterskiing in the area.

The River North Tyne, which runs by the hotel, is known for its salmon and trout, and guests can hire fishing equipment at an additional cost.

Rooms have free Wi-Fi. Superior rooms are generally south-facing, with views across the grounds towards the river. Some have balconies and small patio areas.

Lovely location, with walks from the doorstep. The food is excellent, with the vegetarian options rivalling those from dedicated vegetarian restaurants. Excellent staff, with Vic(toria) - who was on duty in the restaurant on our first evening - deserving a special mention.

We've stayed in a variety of rooms in various areas of the hotel, including the garden annex and all have been lovely. This is a hotel we keep returning to as it has never disappointed.

stayed last winter and returned this winter - we arrived to a warm welcome and was informed the Sauna is currently having a revamp so make sure you double check with the Hotel before travelling if your a keen sauna user , stayed in room 31 this time which was in the block outside the main hotel facing the cricket pitch - the stone steps down to these rooms are not so good for those who are not so stable on there feet or if you have had a few in the bar- thankfully the December weather was dry but im sure many have been soaked getting from these rooms to the main building - the room was cold on arrival and the heating was not on so used the electric oil heater to warm through the room , the hot water was working for bath and shower so not sure why the radiator wasnt working . After a few wet ones in the bar and an excellent meal returned to the room and the heating was still off and the hot water sadly had become luke warm so continued with the electric oil heater to warm the room - i woke up at approx 5am due to the temperature in the room being like the tropics - heating and hot water had come one but didnt fancy a 5am bath or shower so returned to the very comfy bed bar that small hiccup her indoors fully enjoyed the stay and food and we will return to the Riverdale Hall Hotel with the TravelZoo deals which are excellent !!!
