Parking is free. The Fox & Hounds Country Hotel is around 45 minutes' drive from Exeter from Exeter. Eggesford Station, which has services to Exeter and Barnstaple, is just 200 metres down the road.
The Fox & Hounds Country Hotel is a renovated coaching inn set in six acres of picturesque grounds in the North Devon countryside.
There are lots of walking routes nearby, including the Tarka Trail, the Two Moors Way and the South West Coast path, and the hotel has maps and trails for guests to use.
The hotel's gardens extend down to the River Taw, and the property offers a 5-mile stretch of salmon and trout fishing. There's also an on-site fishing school.
Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks are less than an hour's drive away, as is the city of Exeter. It's a 25-minute drive to RHS Garden Rosemoor (open year round). Guests can try falconry, horse riding and shooting on site (charges apply), while DVD players and fishing equipment are available to hire (supplements apply; pre-booking advised).
The restaurant specialises in classic British cuisine using local Devon ingredients, and the bar offers three local ciders and a number of real ales.
Rooms are spacious and feature antique French furniture. The rooms at the back overlook the garden with views of Heywood Forest and Eggesford Church.

The food was superb. The staff, although not many of them, were excellent. They were attentive, professional, polite and friendly. Room was bigger than expected with private outside courtyard. Room very comfortable with SuperKing sized bed. All very good.

This is a very dog friendly hotel. I am not sure I like the dogs being allowed in the restaurant but this was our only negative concern. Having said that all the owners were very careful to keep their dogs under control.

Best visited by car. Although the station is just 10 minute walk to the hotel - you have to walk in the road as there are no pavements and the road can be very busy,

Room 7.No hot water 7.0 am Sunday. Breakfast muffin dry and tough, smoked salmon good portion but tasteless and 1 poached egg raw and ran all over the plate. Reported faulty door lock but not repaired - only needed a bit of oil. Bedroom lighting appalling had to sit in bathroom to read. Chairs in bedroom old and sagging. TV too small to see from bed. No one asked or cared if we were happy. Previous visit very good but we will not be returning.

We were disappointed to have a lot of noise in our room due to the boiler. We also only had Luke warm water so didn’t take a bath or shower on second morning. The ‘superior room we had was rather dated with regard to furniture. The tv reception in our bedroom was very poor.

Rooms were freezing. Very appreciative of early check in but wrapped in blankets until heating came on at 4pm. Heating only came back on in morning until 9am. Apart from the delicious prawns the rest of the tasting menu was bland and the restaurant was also freezing. I very rarely ware a coat normally!

We were delighted with the Superior room and four poster bed.The room and bathroom were spacious and spotlessly clean.A nice view over the gardens .On arrival there were tea making facilities, bottles of water and a jar of homemade shortbread which was appreciated. The first evening we went to the bar/dining room and thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance .The log burner made the room warm and cosy. The five course starter meal was most enjoyable and surprisingly very filling. The waiting staff were very pleasant and efficient.
Other Comments
Our only disappointment during our stay was the first cooked breakfast. The fresh fruit salad/ cereals were very good. When our ordered fried breakfast arrived, the bacon had been cremated, the fried egg had obviously been prepared a long time before being served.Consequently we only ate the sausage and toast.
The second morning we were both put off ordering a cooked breakfast and made do with cereals/toast and fresh fruit salad, which I hasten to add were very nice.
