The Fox & Hounds Country Hotel is a former coaching inn set in six acres of picturesque grounds in the North Devon countryside.

There are lots of walking routes nearby, including the Tarka Trail, the Two Moors Way and the South West Coast Path, and the hotel has maps and trails for guests to use.

The hotel's gardens extend down to the River Taw, and the property offers a 5-mile stretch of salmon and trout fishing. There's also an on-site fishing school. Guests can try falconry, horse riding and shooting on site (charges apply), while DVD players and fishing equipment are available to hire (supplements apply; pre-booking advised).

Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks are half an hour's drive away, as is the city of Exeter. It's a 25-minute drive to RHS Garden Rosemoor (open year round).

The restaurant specialises in classic British cuisine made using local Devon ingredients, and the bar offers three local ciders and a number of real ales.

Rooms are spacious and feature antique French furniture. The rooms at the back have views over the garden to Heywood Forest and Eggesford Church.

Staff were excellent and friendly

We had a very pleasant and relaxing stay, slept really well. The food was really good. We had a tasting menu on the first night which was different to what we usually eat but it was really good. On the second night we had meals from the menu which was very good. The breakfast was good as expected with a good variety of cooked options on the menu. The homemade granola was the best i've tasted.

The hotel is a bit off the beaten track, but was well worth the visit. There is, however a railway station 400 metres from the hotel with an hourly service throughout the day to Exeter and Barstaple.

Despite being on a travelzoo deal we were given excellent superior rooms. Staff friendly and helpful, and food was excellent!

We had an enjoyable break, although as it was wet and my wife is a wheelchair user we were not able to properly explore the grounds and surrounding walkable area. The staff were very accommodating and made our stay.

When we arrived, we discovered that we had not been put in the particular room that I had arranged with the hotel, but in an alternative accessible room, with twin beds instead of a double. The very helpful young lady on duty soon had this sorted and converted the beds to a double. When we sat down to the tasting dinner, most of the dishes on the menu were not suitable for my wife’s dietary needs and she was able to order from the standard menu instead. Both of these incidents demonstrate the level of service provided (with a smile) by the staff.

Nice dog friendly hotel located in the country close to some good walks. Food was very good and the bar/restaurant had a superb log fire. The hotel has no leisure facilities unfortunately but is still worth a stay. The standard rooms were fine but the beds were too firm and uncomfortable for us. Overall a good stay and value for money with travelzoo.

Lovely hotel. The Chateaubriand was amazing as was the tasting menu and breakfast. Really enjoyed our stay.

Food was good. Room a little tired but that might be because it was a dog friendly room. I think breakfast would be better served in the restaurant area rather than their function room. Brilliant location if you’re bringing a dog that likes lots of walking as lots of woods nearby. We caught the train from the local train station to Exeter for a day out.

Enjoyed our 2 nights at this hotel very much. The food was very good and cooked fresh. Staff were first class and very friendly. Just a pity the weather was so bad. We would have liked to have gone on some of the lovely walks in the area.
