Set on a 13-acre estate within the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Brooks Country House is a Georgian manor house with 22 charming rooms.

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from the pretty market town of Ross-on-Wye and a 20-minute drive from the cathedral city of Hereford. It sits on the edge of the Forest of Dean, a former royal hunting ground and one of England's last surviving ancient woodlands. Cheltenham Racecourse and the Welsh market town of Hay-on-Wye, home to the famous literary festival, can both be reached in around 50 minutes.

There's a heated pool on the grounds (open in summer only) and a games room with a pool table. Dinner is served Monday-Saturday in the former library and a traditional lunch is available every Sunday. The menu features a bottle of the hotel's very own white wine, produced at the nearby Pengethley vineyard. The hotel can count Led Zeppelin and Oasis as former guests; the bands stayed here while recording at a studio nearby.

The rooms are split between the main house, the courtyard and the coach house, and all feature a hospitality tray of goodies on arrival and free Wi-Fi. The rooms in the main house have period details including chandeliers, fireplaces, antique furniture and roll top baths; some have four-poster beds.

Nice location and good food

The whole hotel was cold and the room in particular, the manager said the problem was the wet fire wood! But that was one fire in the bar area.

The fantastic views, the glorious walk to the charming local pub (Lough Pool Inn) and the amazing poached eggs - best I've tasted!
Other Comments
The room was beautiful (they very kindly upgraded us) but very cold. It was below zero outside but the windows were draughty and air temperature generally was very cold all through the hotel (which would put me off staying in winter again). Also, the 80's soundtrack blaring throughout dinner and breakfast was slightly incongruous to the classic country manor house environment!
