Why We Love This Hotel

  • Request the turndown service, and you'll find local sweets left on your pillow at night
  • There are loads of places on site to relax and take in the scenery, like the wraparound porch and outdoor fire pit
  • About a three- to four-hour drive from Boston and New York City for a short weekend getaway

Named after the neighboring mountain range, the Kimpton Taconic styles itself after the grand resorts that popped up in New England in the late 19th century, complete with charmingly aristocratic amenities — think morning coffee and tea service coupled with an evening social hour hosted in the library. There are also 21st-century perks like USB charging ports and Chromecast available in guest rooms.

The hotel's interior feels familiar and inviting yet fresh, with fireplaces in common spaces and historic photos on the walls offset by modern fixtures and small pops of color. The warm vibe extends to guest rooms, too, where you'll find vintage touches like analog alarm clocks by the beds and handcrafted wooden walking sticks for hiking.

Nearby are loads of activities available year-round: from skiing and fly-fishing to boutique shopping in downtown Manchester (less than five minutes driving). History buffs will also want to check out the Hildene estate — the former residence of Abraham Lincoln's son Robert (roughly six minutes away).

The Copper Grouse restaurant specializes in regional classics prepared with locally sourced ingredients, like the New England clam chowder with applewood smoked bacon. We recommend the grilled Georges Bank swordfish, or for breakfast, the brown butter and apple French toast with Vermont maple syrup.

It was an all around pleasant experience. Staff was very friendly and hotel was charming/warm. We had a nice time meeting people at “social hour” sitting in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine. It’s a great location for shopping and dining out.

We arrived on an extremely snowy evening. Front desk check in was easy and accommodating. The evening social hour was welcomed after the long drive. The room was lovely and comfortable.

The Kimpton Taconic is a lovely property on Main Street in Manchester, VT. The staff is without exception friendly, welcoming and helpful with any issues one might encounter. We chose a cozy room with an attractive gas fireplace, which added a welcome warmth to our stay during a sudden cold snap. (The room was perfectly climate controlled, but the ambiance of the fire was lovely.) Rooms are comfortable and well-appointed; we've stayed there several times now, and I would not say they are overly large, but neither to they feel cramped. We usually visit Manchester at least twice a year; the Kimpton Taconic has become our preferred lodging because we prefer to travel with our two tiny dogs; they are not only completely dog-friendly, but do not charge a pet fee! The atmosphere of the hotel is really positively affected by this policy; it's often filled with dog lovers and their pets, which enhances the relaxed feeling of welcome. We also enjoy their daily afternoon wine and snack hour, and their morning coffee service provides excellent coffee. Their on-site restaurant, the Copper Grouse, is quite popular, but after dining there once we have preferred to seek other options -- and there are many in Manchester, from casual fast to high-end foodie. The food at the Copper Grouse is certainly good enough, but to me is not equal to the price point. A lovely bar, though, with truly excellent cocktails and some interesting local spirits on offer. We often meet friends for drinks there before moving on to dinner elsewhere.

Our experience was lovely, from check-in to check- out. Our room with its fireplace was cozy and the room's color scheme was restful.

The location in Manchester allowed us to leave our car parked in the hotel lot and walk to our destinations.

The only problem is we had a pet friendly room and were told all rooms were pet friendly ugh The room was clean but not loving the idea of sleeping on a bed many pets have slept on and carpet

Quick one night visit for shopping, dinner and a nice night. Started with free, well attended wine reception. Dining room was nice and open and surprisingly busy for a Veterans Day Sunday eve. Room was nice, if a little smaller than expected. No coffee in the room but a coffee station in the lobby.

The fireplace in lobby was pretty; the wine hour was a nice feature; the valet attendant opened doors. I don't understand the purpose of the facility fee and would not pay $30 on top of the room price. Definitely not worth the price

I showed up at the hotel at 1pm and was told the room would be ready in less than an hour. We went out to lunch, returned almost two hours later, and the room was still not ready so my handicapped mother and I sat in the lobby waiting for the room. I had specifically asked for a room with not too much walking (in reservation notes). Finally, they give me a room that was so far from the reception/restaurant that I had to leave my handicapped mother waiting on the second floor so I could change the room. They gave me another room fairly quickly but why I waited two hours for the wrong room is still unclear. Rooms are rather small; the heat vent in the room is noisy when it turns on; the small table in the room (about one square feet in size) has only one chair so two people can not sit and use it together for coffee. There are no brochures in the lobby to assist with sightseeing. Aside from the reception areas ascetics, the standard rooms are nothing spectacular.

It was a beautiful hotel and wonderful setting. Staff was great and the restaurant was too. Loved the social hour and coffee provided in the morning.

The one things that I was disappointed with was the valet, that was supposed to be part of the fee I paid and it was basically nonexistent. They weren’t outside to help me in or out with my luggage or vehicle. I had to request him to bring my car up and then he just turned over the keys without even helping with my luggage. I was shocked that he just walked away. It was also very strange that I had to request him to bring my car up.
