"Whilst we rated the stay at the Speech House highly (excellent room, staff and breakfast) the biggest letdown was the a la carte meal on the first evening. The duck leg starter was dry with very little sauce, and whilst the main course fish was well cooked, the dessert was a disaster (lemon & blueberry tart) with the pudding never having been within a hundred yards of a lemon, and very tasteless blueberry ice cream ! We had a far superior meal on the second evening at the Fountain Inn nearby. The chef's clearly have work to do, as the food nowhere near matches the quite beautiful setting of the Verderers Hall in which it is served."

Overview

With wall-mounted stag heads, oak-beamed ceilings and a weathered yellow-stone exterior, The Speech House Hotel's origin as a hunting lodge for King Charles II is clear throughout.

It's in the Forest of Dean, which is said to have inspired JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth and also featured in "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows". Symonds Yat Rock, 20 minutes' drive away in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has views of the River Wye from 120 metres up, and is popular with hikers and birdwatchers (peregrine falcons nest on the surrounding cliffs).

You can hire kayaks and Canadian canoes for a paddle on the River Wye at the Monmouth Canoe and Activity Centre, which is 20 minutes' drive away, or take a ride on the Dean Forest Railway, which operates steam and diesel trains from Lydney to Parkend; Norchard station, which also has a museum, is around 10 minutes' drive from the hotel.

The ruins of Goodrich Castle, a Norman fortress with great views from the battlements, and Tintern Abbey -- the inspiration for Wordsworth's famous poem -- are both within 25 minutes' drive of the hotel, as is Kymin Hill, which features a charming 18th-century round house and naval temple overlooking Monmouth and the Wye Valley.

The Orangery and bar serves light lunches, fresh coffee and traditional pub food. The restaurant has been a court for the local Verderers (who meet four times a year to discuss the protection of the forest) since 1696, and it serves an à la carte menu and homemade desserts. Wi-Fi is free in public areas. Courtyard rooms are in external buildings behind the main house.

There are areas that look a little tired and there are small things that need attention - like not all the lights in the room worked, nor the bathroom fan.

Back to the eighties in the bedroom, it needs bringing up to date, and the shower didn’t work, and no handles for ease of getting out of the bath, dangerous!

Although having a nice garden and the Orangery, the food was very much below par, although the breakfast was excellent, so not a total loss.

Friendly staff, good size room on the 2nd floor, lots of stairs but that wasn’t an issue for us. Enjoyed a nice meal in the orangery. Good buffet breakfast

Nice room outside in the courtyard but if it is raining be prepared if your going back into the main building. Ample of parking so it was easy to unload near the car. Room was ok could do with updating as it was quite dark in the room due to the furniture. Bathroom was very nice looks recently updated. Four poster bed was very dusty. Nice walks around the hotel. Plenty of activities to do so plan well. Nearest town are both 15 minutes both ways by car. We had cream tea and sat near the garden which was nice on one of the days. Staff was friendly upon arrival. Good selection of breakfast on offer. We stayed for two nights was very quiet and tranquil, nice for couples who want a getaway from the city and enjoy the outdoors.
