Overview

Darwin's Townhouse is a late-18th-century Georgian property that underwent a complete refurbishment in 2016 to turn it into a 20-bedroom boutique bed and breakfast in the heart of Shrewsbury town centre.

Located on a quiet street, the hotel overlooks many of the town's Tudor buildings and it's a short stroll from the shops, restaurants and bars of the town centre. The hotel is 100 metres from the River Severn path -- great for a waterside stroll.

Battlefield Falconry Centre and Attingham Park, an English country house owned by the National Trust, are 15 minutes' drive away. The Dana Prison, which offers jailhouse tours, is 10 minutes' walk away. The ruins of Haughmond Abbey are less than 20 minutes' drive away.

Awarded 5-Star B&B status by The AA, the hotel has an octagonal lounge with a fire, books, and games. Retreat to the snug (with a fully stocked honesty bar) or head to the large, bright conservatory with views of the gardens. The modern décor is complemented by features such as a stone staircase and original fireplaces.

Breakfast is served in the conservatory, and features local seasonal produce. While the hotel does not serve lunch or dinner, it has two sister restaurants within a short stroll: The Loopy Shrew, serving traditional English cuisine, and Porterhouse SY1, which offers American-inspired dishes.

The staff are very friendly and exceptionally helpful. The hotel has a lovely atmosphere, very clean, fabulous breakfast menu and well located for all the historic buildings and picturesque riverbank walks.

The parking arrangements were a little stressful to sort out. However thanks to the excellent receptionist (sorry I have forgotten her name) it was explained and very quickly sorted. Our room was a little cramped, not like the above photo, for a double occupancy. It had an ill fitting window which allowed draughts and passing pedestrian vocalisation to be a little too intrusive. However as I had this room on a very good Travelzoo deal, which included an excellent evening meal at Darwin’s Kitchen, I still feel it was very good value for a two night stay.

Darwin’s Townhouse Had a lovely couple of days in Shrewsbury last week and stayed at a little Gem, Darwin’s Townhouse. Set in a quiet area of the town, St Julians Friars, yet within a couple of hundred yards of the town and only 50 yards from ample parking. The river is close by and there are picturesque walks in either direction around “The Loop”, our favourite being towards the park and the beautiful and amazing Dingle with it’s little Lake and excellent floral display. Our deal at the Hotel was quite exceptional value. It has a very friendly atmosphere with all of the staff being very approachable and polite, whilst still being efficient and professional. Our room was quiet and very clean with loads of quirky touches all relating to Darwin’s life. The Breakfast was of a high standard and the presentation and attention to detail was excellent. It has a load of other attributes including an honesty bar and a couple of quiet lounges for those who wish to stay in for a while or during inclement weather. Part of our deal was a three course meal with wine at “Darwin’s Kitchen”. Although carrying the same name do not assume that it is attached to the hotel. This restaurant is around 100 yards away up a reasonable incline, which could prove challenging for the less mobile, however the food there is of a good standard and certainly worth the effort of the relatively short walk Now we’ve located this little Gem we would not hesitate to return again. Excellent.

Really friendly, helpful staff. Central location, clean and very comfortable, places to sit and socialise other than your room, honesty bar, amazing breakfast choice delivered with a smile. All this makes Darwin's Townhouse a real winner and we would definitely like to come back. The proximity to Darwin's kitchen was also great and their meals were lovely. I cannot fault this place.
