Overview

Originally opened in 1910, this historic property known as the "Hotel of Presidents" underwent a full renovation in 2017 to update the lobby, guest rooms and public spaces with new amenities and tech updates; Fodor's says the lobby "is a crown jewel in Chicago's architecture scene."

Each of the hotel's 335 guest rooms is unique, and all have upscale amenities including pillowtop mattresses, rich cotton linens, marble entryways, USB charge points and local artwork. Rooms are spacious with high ceilings and some offer views of Buckingham Fountain and Lake Michigan.

Art enthusiasts may be interested in checking out the 1,600 contemporary artworks, primarily by Chicago artists, on display throughout the hotel. On-site restaurant Mercat a la Planxa earns great reviews for its upscale Spanish cuisine (Travel + Leisure calls it one of the best tapas restaurants in America) while in the lobby they pay homage to the hotel's swingin' past with live jazz performances on select evenings.

Located on Michigan Avenue across from Grant Park, the hotel is less than a 10-minute walk to the Art Institute and a 20-minute walk to the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium. The Adler Planetarium is just a bit farther (and a great place for a photo of the city's famous skyline). Guests can also quickly get two other great Chicago experiences -- the hotel sits just a couple blocks from blues music at Buddy Guy's Legends and deep dish pizza at Lou Malnati's.

Lobby was a bit seedy, but room was nice & clean. Daily cleaning was random, some days good, other days not much was done.

It’s a beautiful space- cool architecture and interior design, and they have modern art everywhere of different kinds (and a floor dedicated to being an art gallery). Everything from the elevators to the chandeliers are gorgeous. The people working there are friendly and helpful. The hotel restaurant, Mercat a la Planxa, is delicious! One of my favorite places to eat now, though it’s a high-end restaurant and so I’ll save it for special occasions.

We arrived around 10:30 AM and were able to check in early, which was great! The hotel was located very close to our tour and the museum we wanted to visit! We enjoyed the bar and restaurant too, wonderful atmosphere! Great history in this hotel! I highly recommend it!
