Overview

Close to the Appalachian Trail, the Mountain Lake Lodge has been in business since before the Civil War and has welcomed guests since the 1930s.

Movie buffs will recognize the sandstone face of the Mountain Lake Lodge as the resort featured in the film "Dirty Dancing," but in recent years, the Lodge has reinvented itself as an adventure destination. With 22 miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing, rafting and kayaking on the New River or zip-lining through the treetops, there's lots for guests to explore. Note that a number of activities require additional fees, but complimentary activities include lawn chess, shuffleboard, bocce and use of the outdoor pool and hot tub.

Rooms offer king, queen or twin beds. North Side rooms feature views of the property's expansive front lawn, and Suites add a sitting area and jetted bathtub. It's worth mentioning that because the lodge is meant to be a true getaway and an older property, rooms do not include televisions or air conditioners (fans are included in all rooms). However, between exploring the outdoors, dining at Harvest, the farm-to-table restaurant, and chatting around the fireplace in the lobby or over drinks at the Stony Creek Tavern, you should be able to get along without it.

If you’re expecting a walk into Dirty Dancing, you won’t be disappointed! The Lodge looks as it did in the movie and has been interpreted to the movie’s 1963 setting down to no a/c or tv in Lodge sleeping rooms! (Not to worry - there’s plenty to do without tv in your room!) We visited for a siblings & in-laws vacation. We took old family photos we needed to go through. The Lodge lent itself to the period in which we grew up, so the setting was perfect. The staff was great - especially Mattie and Kayla in Harvest and Kinza at the front desk. The food was outstanding. Thank you for a great stay!

If you’re in the Lodge, the rooms aren’t air conditioned, but box fans and ceiling fans make it quite comfortable. Loved it!

This was our second Anniversary trip to Mountain Lake. I hope to make this a regular ocurrence. The setting is out of a story book. The hotel is wonderful. The people are amazing. The staff at the activities center and dining rooms are especially great. I hope to return again and again.

1st- Check in and check out took an unacceptable amount of time. One person at 4pm and 11am (busiest times) trying to help half a dozen or more people both instances. 2nd- Called ahead and asked manager about restaurant and food allergies issues and was assured they would take special care of us. The restaurant was out of most everything. Waiter told us the chefs cut was one thing, then heard another waiter tell someone something else. So, staff didn’t know what they were serving. And cut of beef was totally wrong on our end. Maybe should have gotten another waiter or we should have stopped and asked for the manager, that was so confident in her staff, but ordered the mystery beef. After repeated instructions and questions to the waiter about food allergies and cross contamination, they brought out what requested to be left out on the plate. On top of that, meal was bland and definitely no the quality it was advertised to be.
