The Best Western Royal Clifton Hotel & Spa is in the Victorian seaside town of Southport, in a prime position overlooking King's Gardens and the sea.

The town is on the Sefton Coast, home to over 15 miles of beaches and dunes, and is known for its Grade II-listed iron pier -- said to be the second longest in the UK.

The traditional hotel is near the Grade II-listed Wayfarers Shopping Arcade on Lord Street. The Ribble Estuary National Nature Reserve is a 10-minute drive away from the hotel and Crosby Beach, home of Antony Gormley's "Another Place" sculptures, is half an hour away.

Southport is less than an hour's drive from Liverpool, for bars, restaurants, and museums including Tate Liverpool and The Beatles Story.

The hotel's Pavilion Restaurant serves classic British dishes. Drinks and light snacks are available in the Conservatory Bar and the Chatsworth Bar.

The hotel also has a health club (free for guests), with an indoor pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a steam room and a gym.

"Bedrooms range in size and style, but all are comfortable and thoughtfully equipped", according to The AA Hotel Guide 2017.

That having booked in January we did not have a room booked even after checking with the hotel the day before our arrival, we were offered a standard room facing a brick wall. We did not stay!!!

we had a problem with the radiator (it didn't come on. we were freezing) I reported it to reception.after half an hour-no heat.went back to reception tobe told he was too busy to go down to basement to correct problem. I had to be forceful to get the problem fixed. Evidently he was the only one on reception and couldn't leave his post!

Reasonable Bar prices for a hotel.
Other Comments
The restaurant service was very poor. Table booked for 8.0 pm 29/3/17, no table available. Agreed to wait in the Conservatory Bar until a table became available. 30 mins later, returned to restaurant still no table and a suggestion from the waitress that we find somewhere else to eat. After so heated words a table was found amongst NINE other tables not in use, plus SIX more laid up ready for breakfast???. Management GET A GRIP.

The room we were in for the first night was unsatisfactory but we were able to move into a better room for rthe second night.

I thought the staff were lovely and deserved more support and investment in training and infrastructure by the chain. Receptionists, bar one chap, were very helpful - particularly when presented with a 81 year old mum who likes things just right ... and the waiting on staff in the busy restaurant were nice. The location was excellent (the car park was awful) and the room, although tired and a bit shabby in areas, still had a certain style to it. The bed was dreadful.
Other Comments
Incredibly hard beds, having to ask several times for the Prosecco -which was included in the deal - having to head off a charge for the dinner on the first night (also included in the deal) and the truly appalling state of the shower head.
