Why We Love This Hotel

  • This boutique bolthole is in a traditional fishing village on the Roseland Heritage Coast
  • There are two golden-sand beaches within a couple of minutes' walk
  • New head chef Simon Davies used to work at the Michelin-starred Outlaw's Fish Kitchen -- his bistro menu includes seafood from local harbours

The Llawnroc Hotel is a contemporary property on the south coast of Cornwall. It is on the Roseland Heritage Coast -- an area known for its "intimate wooded valleys, medieval field patterns and chamfered cliffs leading down to hidden coves" (The Daily Telegraph).

The hotel is in Gorran Haven -- a quaint village with whitewashed cottages and a working harbour -- and is a couple of minutes' walk from two sandy beaches and the South West Coast Path. It is also around 10 minutes' drive from the pretty port of Mevagissey and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, which showcases "amazing experiments in horticulture and landscape design" (The Daily Telegraph) and was only rediscovered in 1990. The iconic biomes of the Eden Project are 30 minutes' drive away.

Gwineas Bar & Bistro recently appointed Simon Davies as head chef -- he was previously head chef at Nathan Outlaw's Fish Kitchen when it won a Michelin star. The restaurant offers a taste of Cornwall, with local produce including Cornish strawberries, local asparagus, scallops from Mevagissey, and freshly landed hake from Looe.

The bistro occupies the site of an old inn, with a bar offering local ales on tap, as well as wines, lagers and cocktails. You can dine out on the terrace in good weather.

There are 18 individually decorated bedrooms, some with sea views and others with balconies. Wi-Fi is free.

It was very clean, bright and had and an enviably wonderful position so close to a stunning coastal Cornish village.

As it did not command sea views from the evening dining area, a little more attention to the garden/ paved area would have just added a colourful and more pleasant outlook for guests

Amazon location in the pretty village of Goran Haven with its pretty beaches. And the generous sized room we had.

The only minor downside was that a couple of areas in hotel were a bit dusty.

Unfortunately 3 weeks prior to our trip I was admitted to hospital and underwent emergency surgery. My husband contacted the hotel to see if it would be possible to change the dates of our visit due to the unforeseen circumstances. There hotel was adamant that this was not possible and the only option left to us would be to change the name on the booking and give someone else our place. Whilst I appreciate the Terms and conditions of the booking, we dd feel that under the very exceptional circumstances, a degree of leeway may have been possible. It is interesting to note that we had also booked another night at a hotel in Fowey via Travelzoo under the same T&Cs who were more than happy to allow us to rearrange the date.
