Why We Love It

  • There are two golden-sand beaches within a couple of minutes' walk
  • New head chef Simon Davies used to work at the Michelin-starred Outlaw's Fish Kitchen -- his bistro menu includes seafood from local harbours

The Llawnroc Hotel is a contemporary property on the south coast of Cornwall. It is on the Roseland Heritage Coast -- an area that is known for its "intimate wooded valleys, medieval field patterns and chamfered cliffs leading down to hidden coves" (The Daily Telegraph).

The hotel is in Gorran Haven -- a quaint village with whitewashed cottages and a working harbour -- and is a couple of minutes' walk from two sandy beaches and the South West Coast Path. It is also around 10 minutes' drive from the pretty port of Mevagissey and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, which showcases "amazing experiments in horticulture and landscape design" (The Daily Telegraph) and was only rediscovered in 1990. The iconic tropical biomes of the Eden Project are 30 minutes' drive away.

Gwineas Bar & Bistro has recently appointed Simon Davies as head chef, previously head chef at Nathan Outlaw's Fish Kitchen when it won a Michelin star. The restaurant offers a real taste of Cornwall, with local produce including Cornish strawberries, local asparagus, scallops from Mevagissey, and freshly landed hake from Looe.

The bistro occupies the site of an old inn, and the bar shows live sports with local ales on tap, as well as wines, lagers and cocktails. You can dine out on the terrace in good weather.

There are 18 individually decorated bedrooms, some with sea views and others with balconies. Wi-Fi is free.

The staff that were there (the manageress was absent) were friendly, if completely untrained.
Other Comments
The food in the restaurant and at breakfast. The fact that in spite of requesting a quiet room we were given the noisiest room in the hotel. The inside of the hotel was only just clean, the outside had very obviously not been cleaned for months.

Friendliness and efficiency of staff. Very good breakfast. Cleanliness and modern decor.
Other Comments
Evening meal was disappointing in comparison to everything else. A number of the meals were unavailable, even though it was early in the evening and the restaurant was not busy.

The stay was was a peaceful and comfortable experience in a very beautiful part of Cornwall. The food was exceptional and the staff even more so. We had to change our booking twice because of bad weather, and they handled this very professionally and calmly. Highly Recommended

The breakfast and the room.

It would have been good if we were made aware that discounts were available to local attractions on our arrival as we only realised this on our departure. The service in the hotel restaurant was very slow. Otherwise it was very good.

Food was absolutely amazing
Other Comments
Room- stains on the carpet, taps and plugs were broken, not working well. When we went to have a cup of coffee, the creams provided were out of date and the next day when they we topped up.. they were also out of date.
