Overview

With candlelit corridors, vaulted ceilings, a portcullis and a wealth of history buried within, Coombe Abbey Hotel is a former 12th-century monastery set in rolling Warwickshire countryside. It is surrounded by the 500-acre Coombe Country Park, which has Capability Brown-designed gardens and a lake bordered by willow trees.

The property has an interesting history -- founded in 1150 as the Abbey of Cumbe, it was surrendered to King Henry VIII in 1539, during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. It was later home to Princess Elizabeth (daughter of James I), who came to be educated at the abbey in 1603. Had James I been killed in the Gunpowder Plot, Guy Fawkes planned to kidnap the princess from Coombe Abbey and put her on her father's throne.

Warwickshire is home to many stately homes and sites of historic interest. National Trust property Charlecote Park is 30 minutes' drive away. The hotel is also 45 minutes from Coughton Court, which, like Coombe Abbey, claims historical ties with the Gunpowder Plot (open March-October). Stratford-upon-Avon and Birmingham are within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel, and Coventry is 15 minutes away.

The hotel has a restaurant, and a bar with an extensive drinks menu. Afternoon tea is served in the Garden Room restaurant from 12:30-3:45pm, and pre-booking is advised. Medieval banquets are held on Saturday, and have been running for 40 years.

Rooms have ornate decoration and a traditional look. Feature Bedchambers each have a unique feature, such as a 4-poster bed, a bed with a canopy or a Victorian roll-top bath. Some bedrooms are in the original mansion, and some are in a modern wing.

Our dining experience wasn't quite as good as the previous visit but it won't put us off booking again if Travelzoo do a deal. The food was great but the service was just a bit lacking. We appreciate that they were very busy.

Could be cleaned and maintained a little better, thought it is not shabby or dirty.

Yes the hotel itself and dinner was first class.
Other Comments
We had an amazing dinner and room was fine but the breakfast was of a standard you could expect in a motorway service station. There were only 2 members of staff who didn't have time to clean the tables or get fresh food. Eggs where hard and cold, you had to stand around waiting for plates etc. Tea and coffee was stewed, bread for toast was of the cheapest quality. Such a shame after such a lovely evening.
