Its location in central Munich is probably the main attraction, but the 4-star Derag Livinghotel am Viktualienmarkt has much more to offer -- proximity to the city's best food market, stylishly decorated rooms, a destination vegetarian restaurant and an eco-friendly ethos.
The food market is the Viktualienmarkt, filled with artisan food stalls and delis -- pick up lunch or breakfast here before exploring the city's central Marienplatz and its impressive city hall (five minutes' walk). Munich's museums and galleries are within easy reach, although if you're here for Oktoberfest, you'll need to take a 20-minute U-Bahn trip. Venturing further afield? Munich doesn't shy away from its darker history -- Dachau concentration camp memorial is 40 minutes' drive from the city, or an hour away by train and bus.
Munich isn't short of places to eat but the hotel's restaurant, TIAN, offers something out of the ordinary with imaginative, beautifully presented vegetarian dishes in an elegant setting. Anyone who hasn't burned off enough energy exploring the city (or needs to work off a night at the beer hall) can head for the hotel's small gym.
Rooms are stylish and modern -- wood floors, cream sofas and photography on the walls. Guests rate the adjustable beds (firm or soft, depending on your preference) and the daily ration of free beer. Wifi is free throughout. Superior rooms face the market, Deluxe rooms offer more space and a small kitchenette -- some have separate seating areas -- and face the courtyard.
