The Hallmark Hotel Llyndir Hall, Chester South, in the village of Rossett on the border of England and Wales, is a 20-minute drive from the Roman city of Chester. It is set in five acres of landscaped gardens and has an AA-Rosette restaurant, a pool, a sauna, a small gym and a spa offering beauty treatments.
Guests can choose from the à la carte menu in The Garden restaurant or for lighter meals or afternoon snacks head to the Gallery Lounge Bar. All 48 bedrooms have free Wi-Fi and some have views over the gardens.
Wrexham is a 15-minute drive away and Llangollen -- a town that's set on the River Dee, on the edge of the Berwyn Mountains -- is a 25-minute drive from the hotel. You can browse the independent shops, cafés and tea rooms in Llangollen or try the steep walk up to the ruins of the medieval castle Castell Dinas Bran.
Chester is also worth a visit especially for history fans -- Lonely Planet calls it "one of English history's greatest gifts to the contemporary visitor". There's a 2-mile walk along the walls that surround the city, a route that highlights Chester's historical importance. Look out for Eastgate Clock, which was erected to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
