When 1920s railroad magnate Henry Flagler dreamed up the idea for Casa Marina, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, his original intention was to provide accommodations for his wealthiest clients. His vision included over 1,000 acres of private sandy beach, an expansive front lawn and grand public spaces.
The historic hotel retains Art Deco era touches like dark wood beamed ceilings and pillars along with the original artwork. The property also features more modern additions like a dramatic walkway from lobby to beach flanked by palm trees and shallow pools.
Rooms and suites are light and airy with earth-toned furnishings, polished hardwood floors and large windows to let in the Florida sunshine. If your budget permits, it’s worth it to upgrade to a room with your own private lanai with direct beach and pool access.
The sights and sounds of Old Key West and lively Duval Street are a 10 to 15-minute walk from the hotel, but you may be too busy enjoying the hotel’s activities to venture off the grounds.
Indulge your inner child with a sand sculpting class on the hotel beach, the largest private beach in Key West. If you’d rather stick to digging your toes in the sand, schedule a romantic private dinner for two, surf side. Hit the links on the hotel’s private 18-hole golf course first to work up your appetite.
Water sports abound here, and standouts include snorkeling or diving just off-shore where you can explore America’s last living coral reef. Adventurous types can sign up for an all-day experience that includes snorkeling, para-sailing, a water trampoline and a sunset sail.
The morning after, treat yourself to a spa day to work out the kinks, or soothe sunburned skin. All massages can be done outdoors in a private cabana to enjoy the soothing sounds of the surf.
