Overview

The Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa is a minute's walk from the River Thames, and sits just beyond the ramparts of Windsor Castle. It's named after the architect behind St Paul's Cathedral and the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, who himself grew up in Windsor.

The Grade II-listed hotel is in a great location from which to explore the shops and eateries of Windsor and Eton, and it even has its own private jetty for boat mooring and Thames cruises. It’s a 6-minute walk from Eton College. Windsor High Street -- a 2-minute walk across Eton Bridge -- is a great place to watch the Changing of the Guards ceremony, which is held on alternate days at 11am (except for Sundays). Windsor Castle -- which "encapsulates 900 years of British history" (The Daily Telegraph), and is home to some of the most prestigious works of art in the Royal Collection -- is open for daily tours and is a 7-minute walk away. Ascot Racecourse is within 20-minutes' drive of the hotel and Colne Valley Regional Park and Henley-on-Thames are both within a 40-minute drive -- the latter of which sits on the edge of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The hotel's Thames View Restaurant has a choice of à la carte and set-menu dining options. Sunday lunches come with a Bubbles & Jazz option, comprising three courses, free-flowing prosecco and music from a local jazz trio.

The Thames View Lounge Bar and Terrace has a plethora of draught beers available – including Windsor and Eton bottled ale and lager -- cocktails and wines. It also serves a menu of whiskies, bourbons and cognacs. The bar offers tea supplied by Darvilles of Windsor, who have been blending teas for over 150 years. This venue also serves classic English puddings, such as homemade Eton Mess -- traditionally served at Eton College -- and old-fashioned bread and butter pudding.

Wren's Club -- just across the courtyard from the main house -- has a well-equipped gym and a luxury spa, offering a range of relaxation treatments. Bedrooms are located both in the main house, and across the lane. Early check-in and late checkout must be requested at least 48 hours in advance. Parking spaces at the hotel are limited, and are an extra £25 per car, per night (payable to the hotel direct). Wi-Fi is free.

The downside to the hotel is the double glazing in the room wasn't very good. Considering Windsor is under the flightpath for heathrow, one of the world's international busiest airports, you can hear everything outside. As well as aeroplanes, we could hear workmen at 7am using electric tools on a bank holiday Monday!!!!!!
