Overview

The Rutland Arms Hotel is a Georgian property that was built in 1804. It's located in Bakewell, a busy market town in the Peak District National Park, and is steeped in history and tradition. Not only is The Rutland Arms Hotel reported to be the birthplace of the Bakewell pudding -- the thing that Bakewell is "probably best known for", according to Lonely Planet -- but it's also hosted the likes of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, JMW Turner and Lord Byron.

This stone-built property is reportedly where Austen stayed while writing "Pride and Prejudice", and Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House, which both feature in the 2005 film adaptation of the novel, are both within 15 minutes' drive of the hotel.

Bakewell is "ringed by famous walking trails" (Lonely Planet), so it's a great base for those that appreciate the great outdoors. There's a 3.5-mile circular route along the Monsal Trail to Hassop Station, returning across fields to Bakewell. The spa town of Buxton and Matlock, Derbyshire's county town, are 20 minutes' drive away.

The hotel's Square Restaurant serves locally sourced produce, and all bedrooms feature country-style furnishings, a television, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. There's free Wi-Fi throughout.

Good location, nice clean modern room and ensuite

Only issue we had that the ensuite shower only produced a trickle of water. Real shame as this let down our review of stay. Reported to reception for their consideration

We wanted to stay near Chatsworth in order to cut travelling time for our planned visit. So this was an ideal choice. Our room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable Although we arrived late we were in time to order food from the bar, which was served promptly and was very nice.Good choice of Bar food. My husband liked the choices of beer! Breakfast was very nice, a good choice of buffet and traditional hot breakfast with a fish option as well. On the first morning we ate about 8:00 which suited us best, on the second morning it was about 9:00 and so as there were a lot of people there we waited slightly longer for our cooked food. Might be worth noting for someone who wanted to get away quickly. We dined in the restaurant at the hotel for our second night. Excellent service from a young lady called Sophie, very attentive and professional. Food was delicious and we recommended it to other guests. Would not hesitate to stay again if we were in the area.
Other Comments
We were in the courtyard area across the road from the main hotel, able to park on the 1st night, but not the 2nd night as it was full. But a fellow guest informed us where the long stay parking way (two minutes walk) so that was not a problem. Would have been useful if hotel had told us that though. Need to obtain Hotel Guest Pass to display when parked in courtyard area, again not mentioned by hotel staff when checking in, but these are only very slight negatives
