The White Hart Inn is a characterful former coaching inn dating from 1554. With just eight bedrooms, this restaurant with rooms makes a cosy base for a countryside break, or you could travel there on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, which calls at Winchcombe station.

Winchcombe is a sleepy town with quaint cottages, boutiques and a 15th-century church, and it was once the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia. It's a good base from which to explore quintessential Cotswold villages such as Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh -- all are within 30 minutes' drive of the hotel.

The inn is also at the intersection of the Cotswold Way and Gloucestershire Way walking routes.

Sudeley Castle, the former home of Henry VIII's sixth wife, Catherine Parr, is less than five minutes' drive away, and is open 8-30 December for a Spectacle of Light exhibition. Cheltenham Racecourse is a 15-minute drive away.

The hotel's dining room serves rustic and hearty British cuisine. Ingredients are sourced locally, and the bar stocks regional guest ales and Hereford cider. There's also a wine shop on site.

Bedrooms have country-style décor -- many contain antique furniture, and all include free Wi-Fi. Lazy mornings are encouraged, with breakfast served until noon. Well-behaved dogs can stay at no extra charge.

Breakfasts very good and service good. Evening meal tasty and plentiful and the cream tea was nice.

The supposed superior room did not feel superior, dusty bedroom, dusty bathroom and dirty skirting boards. Offhand manager/receptionist. Stated items in booking missing from room, no toiletries until requested. No complimentary bottles of water, no direct dial phone. Duff bulb in bedside lamp, was replaced when asked but why no room check before occupation? Room faced noisy road so not restful. A lovely old building with lots of potential but felt run down upstairs and uncared for.

Very friendly and welcoming staff. Food was very good both breakfast and dinner. On the second day we got down for breakfast much earlier and the bacon was freshly grilled and not quite as crispy as on the first day. — get down early ! Wines were very reasonably priced as was the bar generally. Very generous servings for dinner — be hungry when you go in for dinner. One minor grumble was the cleaning. — room not hoovered before our occupancy but was comfortable

This was our 2nd visit to The White Hart. Our room was basic but for the price of our stay it was fine. Food is lovely, staff professional, attentive and friendly. Good choice of both food and wine. Breakfast was also absolutely lovely with some different options such as eggy bread and eggs benedict. Super stay again. Thankyou.
