Overview

Newton House is a former coaching inn dating back to the 18th century. It's set in the farming hamlet of Alsop-en-le-Dale in the Peak District National Park, where "some of England's most evocative scenery" beckons, according to Lonely Planet.

The Tissington Trail has a 13-mile bridleway that you can walk or cycle, and it's accessible from the hotel's garden. Dovedale National Nature Reserve -- with it's limestone ravine, crags, famous stepping stones and mature woodland -- is 10 minutes' drive away. Speedwell Cavern, where you can take an underground boat journey through the caves, is 40 minutes by car.

Tissington Hall -- a Grade II-listed Jacobean mansion and a filming location for the BBC's adaptation of "Jane Eyre" -- is five minutes' drive away. The town of Ashbourne has a pretty cobbled market place and takes 10 minutes, and Bakewell and Buxton are 20 minutes' drive. Sudbury Hall, Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall stately homes, as well as Alton Towers, are all within 30 minutes' drive.

Newton House has a bar serving traditional pub food. Picnic lunches can be arranged for scenic walks and there are drying facilities too. Bikes can be rented at Ashbourne Cycle Hire, which is 10 minutes away by car. While some rooms are in cottages adjacent to the hotel, most of the 28 bedrooms are located in the main house.

The breakfast was lovely, the situation is perfect for the Tissington Trail and the boot room (that also accommodated bikes) was very useful.

Other Comments
Newton house is run like a back packers hostel and charging top end hotel prices. We felt they were doing us a favour accommodating us, rather than valued guests. The decor was very dated. Towels were thin . Heating barely adequate. Old fashioned elegance is good but this was like a poorly managed geriatric home.
