Why We Love This Hotel

  • This traditional seaside hotel on East Cliff has views of the Isle of Wight
  • Bournemouth Pier and the Oceanarium are 15 minutes' walk away
  • Facilities include a restaurant, an indoor pool and a gym
  • The New Forest National Park is 20 minutes' drive away

Hallmark Hotel Bournemouth Carlton is a grand old seaside hotel with well-tended gardens and impressive views of the coastline and the Isle of Wight. The hotel is on East Cliff, a 5-minute walk along a zigzag path from Bournemouth's 7-mile-long beach.

The hotel is 15 minutes' walk along the waterfront from Bournemouth Pier and Oceanarium: The Bournemouth Aquarium, where you can see humboldt penguins, green sea turtles and blacktip reef sharks, among other species. Bournemouth's railway station and high-street shops are 15 minutes' walk away.

The New Forest is 20 minutes' drive away. This 220-square-mile national park is home to ponies and deer, and has many walking, cycle and nature trails to explore. We recommend the deer-viewing platform at Bolderwood, around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel; three circular walks start at the car park and visitor centre there.

Frederick's, the hotel's restaurant, serves traditional British dishes in an impressive high-ceilinged dining room with sea views. There's also a lounge for light bites and afternoon tea, and a club-style bar. Other facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and a gym.

Rooms are spacious and have traditional décor. Feature/View Rooms have sea views. Wi-Fi is free.

We had asked for early supper as we were going to the theatre, and we phoned before leaving home in the morning but were told the restaurant wouldn’t be open until 6.30pm. Half an hour to order and eat a 3 course meal- already paid for, was a big ask!! On arrival we asked to see the menu so that we could pre order and be ready to eat the main course at 6.30. We managed 2 courses by 7pm!! The receptionist when we arrived said we were just booked for dinner on one evening, but when I insisted we were booked for dinner on both ev3nings she , quite aggressively said she would have to ask the manager later, as he was in a meeting. We did get a phone call in our room some time later that said there was a mistake on the computer, but no apology! That was are only ‘blackmark’ on the coupl3 of days!

spacious - generally

The communal areas were great and spacious, as were the rooms. The bathroom could have done with some TLC - how hard is it to replace the shower door's seals so that water doesn't flood the bathroom?? But as is often the case - the food let this hotel down, would saying 'school dinners' be a bit harsh? maybe

What let the hotel down was the tea/coffee facilities at breakfast, very poor. I would have preferred to be offered a pot of tea or filtered coffee not a coffee machine

The staff in the restaurant and the quality of the food. It took 2 hours and 20 minutes to get three courses and we had to chase the staff constantly. The staff were morose and miserable. We had lamb rump and asked for it rare and it came out well done and the dauphinois potato were like lumps of concrete
