Why We Love This Hotel

  • This traditional seaside hotel on East Cliff has views of the Isle of Wight
  • Bournemouth Pier and the Oceanarium are 15 minutes' walk away
  • Facilities include a restaurant, an indoor pool and a gym
  • The New Forest National Park is 20 minutes' drive away

Overview

Hallmark Hotel Bournemouth Carlton is a grand old seaside hotel with well-tended gardens and impressive views of the coastline and the Isle of Wight. The hotel is on East Cliff, a 5-minute walk along a zigzag path from Bournemouth's 7-mile-long beach.

The hotel is 15 minutes' walk along the waterfront from Bournemouth Pier and Oceanarium: The Bournemouth Aquarium, where you can see humboldt penguins, green sea turtles and blacktip reef sharks, among other species. Bournemouth's railway station and high-street shops are 15 minutes' walk away.

The New Forest is 20 minutes' drive away. This 220-square-mile national park is home to ponies and deer, and has many walking, cycle and nature trails to explore. We recommend the deer-viewing platform at Bolderwood, around 30 minutes' drive from the hotel; three circular walks start at the car park and visitor centre there.

Frederick's, the hotel's restaurant, serves traditional British dishes in an impressive high-ceilinged dining room with sea views. There's also a lounge for light bites and afternoon tea, and a club-style bar. Other facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and a gym.

Rooms are spacious and have traditional décor. Feature/View Rooms have sea views. Wi-Fi is free.

lovely old hotel but rooms although fantastic in size are beginning to look a little dated and would benefit from a little redecoration, but that wont stop us returning

We enjoyed our stay at the hotel. There were a few issues with the room and at checkout (see below). Overall an enjoyable experience.

The team at Reception both check-in and check-out were excellent. The room 215, although comfortable had a door to the bathroom which did not close properly, and there were leaking and howling windows in the strong wind/rain. Dinner was enjoyable but we were surprised, at Check-out, that we had to pay an extra £2.50 each for the red wine sauce with our steak. We understood the £2.50 supplement for the steak but there was no indication for the sauce. We were booked for a 3-course meal with Travelzoo, but on checkout the bill showed a charge for the dessert . We queried. The receptionist checked and confirmed that we should not have been charged and amended the bill. Overall a nice experience. We shall definitely do again on a similar Travelzoo deal.

Enjoyed the steak meal and happy to pay the £2-50pp supplement but thought the £2-50pp charged without being told it was extra was a bit unfair

However the dining organisation has worrying issues which would prevent us returning. Breakfast organisation was poor even though only 5 couples in the restaurant 30 minutes before bed of breakfast time. Machine coffee was luke warm. Restaurant ran out of bacon and we waited 20 minutes for replenishment so other food was then cool Apologies from staff but no sense of urgency. A shame as evening meal was very nice. On checking out we were initially charged for £11 of drinks which were not ours. No one had signed for it and the receptionist said, "If you say you did not have them " by implication that we were being dishonest. Only the fact our signed receipt was there for our actual bill meant she acted on it. This is a very worrying feature of any hotel and sadly means we will not go back there ir recommend it. Thank you Travelzoo for a good deal, though

As expected it was priced to fill rooms in the slack season and provided all the amenities required for a group get together as an annual post Christmas gathering. The Dinner was well serviced without too much fuss.

We prefer a bit more service at breakfast such as tea and toast etc.. without self catering.
