Deemed the St. Andrews of American golf by golfing legend Bobby Jones, Pinehurst Resort has been part of golfing lore for more than 100 years. The resort is located in North Carolina's historic Village of Pinehurst, which Travel + Leisure describes as a "golfer's wildest dream."

The AAA 4-Diamond resort is known for being the site of more championships than any other golf resort in the country -- including the 2014 U.S. Open -- and is the only resort in the South that has nine signature courses. Each of the 18-hole courses was designed by the sport's leading names, including Tom Fazio, Rees Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Donald Ross. Fodor's says, "The courses -- known by their numbers -- can bring a tear to a golfer's eye with their beauty." Golf fees range from $59-$429 based on the time of year and the course.

Pinehurst Resort is also home to a full-service spa, rocker-lined verandas and gardens. A wide range on on-site activities are available, including tennis, putting greens, driving ranges, croquet, lawn bowling and pickleball.

The elegant Carolina Hotel -- where Travelzoo guests stay with this deal -- opened on New Year's Day in 1901 and is known for its copper cupola and sweeping verandas. The Carolina has been a AAA 4-Diamond property since 1982.

From the press:
  • "Civilized pleasures await in the spacious public rooms and elegantly traditional accommodations, on the rocker-lined wide verandas, and amid the gardens" -- Fodor's
  • "The Pinehurst Resort, known for its [nine] courses and illustrious history with the sport ... maintains one of the better-known golf schools in the nation" -- Travel + Leisure

The grounds, valet parking attendants, bell hops, check-in/out clerks, room service and spa/fitness staff were impeccable! Unfortunately, there was something dangling from my ceiling in the room obvious when the air circulated. The hostess at the Carolina Dining Room would not seat me 10 minutes prior to my reservation despite the fact that the dining hall was bare. The waitress was too familiar and although she gave an explanation as to why some of my $14 cocktail drink was spilling on the table, she never did wipe it off. I had to do it myself. The lobster was terribly over cooked and the portions were small. The wait staff at the Ryder Cup was attentive but were complaining about their supervisor while they had down time. I found that it took away from my experience. I would return, but would not do so unless at a discounted rate and would select eating at the many great restaurants in the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area instead than the on-site restaurants.

The physical beauty of the hotel and classy atmosphere.

We were disappointed by the "hidden fees" for almost every activity and expense. These are not revealed in the booking process but should be.

Ambiance; comfortable and elegant.

While the buffet breakfast is excellent, the price of $35/person (incl. the 20% gratuity) is way too much. And, if you are a person who only eats a small amount, there is not the option to order from a menu.

The property is very elegant, romantic, and has a nice upscale yet relaxed atmosphere. The rooms are large. The afternoon tea is a nice touch. Staying here is like taking a nice step back in time.

The buffet breakfast was a huge disappointment. (we have very positive memories from years back). The quality was not up to the standards we had come to expect, and the service was non-existent. We had to bring our plates to the wait staff, who were just standing around.

The hotel is super nice, and the area surrounding Pinehurst. We had some experience at this hotel before, so we knew we were in for a treat. We were celebrating our 52nd wedding anniversary.

The meals are exorbitantly priced in the Carolina Dining Room. Thank you for the $25. vouchers--they really helped. We only ate one morning at the breakfast buffet, which is simply wonderful with piano music, but thought the $35. per person charge was outrageous. Thank you for this opportunity. Hope you repeat this one again.
