Why We Love This Hotel

  • Dating back to 1854, Cedar Manor holds three AA Red Stars, which indicate "excellent levels of quality" and "outstanding levels of hospitality and service"
  • This Lake District retreat provides "five-star levels of service and comforts, and a classy, contemporary edge", according to The Daily Telegraph
  • Lake Windermere and the town centre are both less than 10 minutes' walk away

Cedar Manor, which has a picturesque location 10 minutes' walk from Lake Windermere, holds three AA Red Stars -- which means the property has Inspector's Choice status and offers "excellent levels of quality" and "outstanding levels of hospitality and service". The hotel is the highest ranked in Windermere on TripAdvisor, and is described by The Daily Telegraph as having a "classy, contemporary edge".

This is an excellent spot for walking -- Lake Windermere is less than a quarter of a mile away via a nearby bridle path and the town centre is less than 10 minutes' walk away. Ambleside is a 10-minute drive in the other direction; a bus stops right outside the hotel gates. The property has storage for bikes if you are bringing your own.

Built in 1854 from local slate, Cedar Manor has 10 rooms which are named after nearby lakes and fells, including Coniston, Windermere and Langdale. The furniture in the "exceptional" (Good Hotel Guide) bedrooms is made by local craftspeople, and all rooms include a fridge with fresh milk for tea and coffee.

In the mornings, a cooked breakfast is whipped up to order by owner Jonathan. The bar is a pleasant spot for an afternoon or pre-dinner drink, with a good selection of local ales, whiskies and gins available. A lounge menu is available daily between 4-8pm for a selection of bar snacks including cheese and meat platters, halloumi fries and potted shrimp.

Lovely first trip to the Lake district. The weather could have been better to fully appreciate the bus tour around the area albeit the last day was beautiful and I was able to visit lake Windermere and the boat trip blew away some cobwebs. The hotel was very calm and peaceful and its location is excellent for the railway station and the upper town. The lake itself is an easy straight walk about a mile and a half away with lots more eateries and shops but the choices nearby were also very good and buses do run up and down. Loved the extra personalised touches and the chocolates were very tasty as was breakfast. The TV reception was jumpy which may have been weather related but a lovely place to spend a weekend.

Lovely old house very well renovated. The rooms are beautiful and the staff friendly and couldn't be more helpful. The location is perfect for visiting the Lake District and within easy walking distance of the shops in Windermere.

I made the booking in Sept, but unfortunately was not aware that the restaurant was closed in November for the evening meals. I was disappointed that you didn't make this clear on your information.

This one of the best places we’ve ever stayed at in the lakes or actually anywhere. The owner are so friendly and welcoming. The attention to detail is amazing. There was a box of handmade chocolates and a bottle of prosecco waiting for us. The rooms are immaculate and totally luxurious. Breakfast is amazing ... especially the pancakes. We really couldn’t fault the place.
