"It was intimate and friendly. Jonathan and Caroline are caring owners so more like staying at a friends house than in a hotel. Lovely interesting couple who have an eye for detail and beautiful things."

Few Lake District hotels boast as many awards as the Cedar Manor Hotel & Restaurant. Cumbria Tourism voted it Best Small Hotel of the Year in 2014, VisitEngland bestowed its coveted Award for Excellence in 2015 and it is rated the best hotel in Windermere by TripAdvisor users. And you can add to this a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant, an outstanding customer service award and a picturesque location near the iconic Lake Windermere.

The 1850s stone manor has 10 good-size rooms, named after the hills and lakes that they overlook from large windows -- Coniston, Windermere and Langdale to name a few. The décor is pretty, with furniture made by local craftspeople, and you can expect fresh milk in the fridge for tea and coffee. Upgrade to the Coach House Suite for a real treat. There's a super king-size bedroom, lounge with a Juliet balcony, and a double spa bath. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

In the mornings, a cooked breakfast is whipped up by owner Jonathan to order. Past guests rave about the pancakes with maple syrup and bacon, and there's a wide choice of homemade jam. The 2-AA-Rosette restaurant serves modern British fare, such as avocado, artichoke and apple salad, pan-fried chicken with thyme risotto, and rich dark chocolate and raspberry tart with salted popcorn. The restaurant is also open to non-residents so pre-booking is recommended, and (unusually for a small hotel) room service is available. The bar is a pleasant spot for an afternoon or pre-dinner drink and has a good selection of local ales, whisky and gin.

You'll be staying in an excellent spot for walking -- Lake Windermere is less than a quarter of a mile away via a nearby bridle path and the town centre is a 15-minute walk. Ambleside is a 10-minute drive in the other direction, and the bus stops right outside the hotel gates. The property also has two electric bikes to rent (£25 for a full day, including maps), plus storage for bikes if you are bringing your own.

WE had an excellent dinner with a well chosen Malbec. Decent cooked breakfast. Prosecco supplied in room was below the standard of everything else imho.
