Run by the same family for over 50 years, the Arundell Arms is "one of England's major hotels for country sports and fly fishing", according to The Good Food Guide. This charming 300-year-old inn also excels in other areas: the rooms are "ungimmicky, pretty and comfortable", according to The Daily Telegraph, and the restaurant holds two AA Rosettes.

Set in the quiet village of Lifton, the hotel is 30-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park and two miles from the Cornish border. Plymouth, the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan can all be reached in under an hour by car.

The hotel is renowned for its salmon, trout and grayling fishing on the River Tamar -- the hotel owns 20 miles of fishing rights. We have negotiated a half-day fly fishing experience for £49. Information about tackle hire (including waders) is available at the hotel's tackle shop. For rainy days, there's a skittles alley, table football and table tennis on site.

Guests can feast on hearty pub grub in the hotel's Courthouse Bar (closed Monday evenings). There's also a cosy hotel bar selling well-kept cask ales, including local favourite Jail Ale from Dartmoor Brewery. The hotel's fine-dining restaurant was once the village's assembly hall. Now glamorously lit by a crystal chandelier, it has held two AA Rosettes since 1987 and showcases local produce like Devonshire beef and Aylesbury duck. You can get a 4-course tasting-menu dinner for two at the restaurant, with a sorbet course for £49.

The rooms feature antique furniture and beds are on the soft side, but the hotel can provide firmer mattresses on request. Those staying in rooms at the front might hear the church bells on Sunday mornings. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Atmosphere, the feeling of being valued not like the corporate uniformity of the budget chains.

The feeling of how living in the country used to be, Lifton is a breath of fresh air with an interesting history. The hotel has embraced its location and draws on everything local to add to its appeal, food is amazing.
