Overview

The Worsley Arms Hotel is a 19th-century property in the North Yorkshire village of Hovingham, set in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Grade I-listed Hovingham Hall has been home to the Worsley family since 1563 and the village has a shop, a café, a pub, a bakery and a monthly market.

National Trust property Nunnington Hall is a 5-minute drive from the hotel, and the market town of Thirsk is 30 minutes away. Thirsk is famous as the home of James Herriot, author of All Creatures Great and Small; you can learn about him at the World of James Herriot Visitor Attraction. Castle Howard, described by Lonely Planet as "one of the world's most beautiful buildings", is five miles away.

The area is a walker's paradise: you can explore the Hovingham estate or follow trails within the Howardian Hills and the North York Moors National Park. Whitby, Staithes and the fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay are just over an hour's drive from the hotel.

The main restaurant holds two AA Rosettes, while the Cricketers Bar serves lighter meals. Produce is locally sourced, including game and venison from the Hovingham estate and lamb from the village of Coulton, and the hotel has an extensive wine cellar.

From the press:

  • "The hotel has some very attractive gardens, and the village is a delightfully tranquil location" -- The AA Hotel Guide 2018

Excellent friendly staff , service and great location.

The historic old building 1854 is in need of some TLC and investment in its interior fabric to bring it up to date. But a sensitive restoration must not lose its historic qualities.

The situation. The building and village are lovely. A better room might have made us feel differently. Beware no 11!
Other Comments
Room was very tired and very small which perhaps reflects the cheap offer. We reported the noisy dripping shower and cobwebs. The food was good but overpriced and the pretentions in the menu we found humorous.

Other Comments
Booked a room in a hotel but was shunted into a damp annexe across the road We booked 2 nights at the Worsley Arms, an AA 3 star hotel. On arrival we were redirected to a cottage across a busy road where we we were installed in an accommodation block with no facilities other than those in the hotel proper 50 yards away across a busy road. Room 17. Inadequate parking at the annexe. The over bath shower directed water at the shower door which had no seal thus flooding the floor. The shower head could not be redirected away from the door. The walls of the bedroom were damp with condensation, and the grouting between the tiles above the bath were mouldy. We left before the second night but were refunded for this night. There was no explanation of why we were not put in the main hotel.
