In a quiet Dorset village, the family-run Best Western The Grange at Oborne only has 18 rooms, but they are full of character. Parts of the property date back to 1801 and the manor house still has period features throughout.
It’s in a great location for exploring the area. The pretty, historic market town of Sherborne is a mile away and Sherborne Castle is a 5-minute drive. Also nearby is National Trust property Montacute House (30 minutes by car), and Stonehenge and Salisbury are an easy day trip (less than an hour by car). The town of Yeovil is a 20-minute drive.
Back at the hotel, the “popular restaurant offers a good selection of dishes” (The AA Hotel Guide), particularly at breakfast, where you’ll find a wide choice of cereal, yoghurt, fruit, jam and juice, as well as hot dishes cooked to order. Lunch and dinner are also served here -- don’t miss the apple brandy served with the cheese course -- and there’s a cosy lounge attached with a roaring log fire in winter. The Rose and Crown bar is less formal and offers lighter meals.
The bedrooms are comfortable and there’s coffee and tea-making facilities and free WiFi throughout. Many have countryside or garden views and while there’s no lift, accessible rooms are available on the ground floor. Upgrade to a Deluxe Double Room for more space, a separate seating area, bathrobes and slippers, and free soft drinks and fruit on arrival.
