Overview
Family-owned Platzl Hotel overlooks Munich's famous Hofbräuhaus and has a brewing heritage all of its own. The family also runs the Aying Brewery, which has since relocated outside the city, but you can still sample the beer at the on-site Wirsthaus Ayingers pub, and try the Ayinger beer toiletries in the bedrooms.
Beyond beer, this 4-star hotel is in the heart of Munich’s Old Town and has a lot going for it. Marienplatz and public transport links, Viktualienmarkt, the Rezidence Museum and the Nationaltheater München (the city's opera house) are a short walk away.
For something more upmarket than Wirsthaus Ayingers, fine-dining Pfistermühle restaurant is set in the city's only preserved 16th-century mill. It is recognised as "one of the area's oldest and most historic establishments" (Fodor's). Try Bavarian fare such as lobster soup with aniseed-Pernod foam, open pumpkin lasagne with Bavarian blue cheese, or the pink-grilled rack of venison, which serves two and is carved at the table. The wine list showcases Franconian wine (a region in the northwest of Bavaria) and there is a pleasant patio for al fresco dining.
The included breakfast buffet offers pretzels, smoked salmon, eggs, Greek yoghurt, fresh honeycomb and honey, masses of bread and vegan liver sausage.
The bedrooms are a good size and the décor is simple. Expect sound-proofed windows (although those overlooking the Hofbräuhaus are a little noisier), an iPad with guest information, free Wi-Fi and complimentary mineral water on arrival. Upgrade to the impressive Bavarian Suite with oak panelling on the floors, walls and ceiling, an in-room coffee machine and pink marble detail in the bathrooms.
Make sure you venture up to the fifth floor to try the steam room, sauna and sensory showers in the hotel’s spa. There’s also a gym and the Englischer Garten park is a 10-minute walk, for those who like to exercise outside.
