Overview

The 4-star Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel & Spa is a "beautiful and secluded" (Liverpool Echo) traditional country house set in 27 acres of Cheshire woodland.

The property is 15 minutes' drive from the Roman walls and Tudor buildings of Chester -- "one of English history's greatest gifts to the contemporary visitor" (Lonely Planet). Liverpool, where you can explore the famous Albert Dock -- home to The Beatles Story exhibition and Tate Liverpool art gallery -- is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. The many shops, bars and restaurants of Manchester city centre are less than an hour's drive away.

The AA-Rosette-awarded Craxton Wood Grill restaurant serves "imaginative dishes" using "quality produce", says The AA Restaurant Guide 2017. There is also a cocktail lounge with an outdoor terrace that is open in fine weather.

The "wonderful" (Manchester Evening News) Vital Health & Wellbeing Club and Spa, which underwent a £1.4 million renovation in 2014, features an indoor pool, a gym, relaxation and treatment rooms, and a coffee bar serving healthy snacks and refreshments. The extensive thermal suite includes a sauna, a steam room, two aromatic drench showers, two footbaths and an ice fountain.

We've also negotiated a Spa Day w/Massage & Facial for £49.

According to The AA Hotel Guide 2017, the hotel offers "a variety of spacious and comfortable rooms, well equipped with modern amenities". Executive Rooms are larger than Classic Rooms, and feature garden views, upgraded toiletries, bathrobes and slippers. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

I liked the hotel grounds and location. The staff were also nice.
Other Comments
The hotel needs a major upgrade. It's very dated and also the bar area is very tiny and not really somewhere you would want to spend time if you didn't fancy going out

Very nice room and Hotel arrangements were fine

The spa facilities were dissapointing. Sauna and Steam room was out of action on the pool side. When we went to the Thermal suite, the foot spa was not working properly, and the Ice experience also was not available. We had particularl;y booked this hotel for the spa facilities.

Lovely room, friendly staff, the thermal suite was great.
Other Comments
The drinks were ridiculously overpriced. The breakfast wasn't that great, a bit tasteless.

The food was lovely and really well presented
Other Comments
On the first day of our stay the steam room and sauna were not working so all visitors had access to the thermal suite which would normally be an additional cost and what was included in our booking. I appreciate this was unavoidable as things like this can happen but it would've been nice to have been offered some kind of gesture in return for the inconvenience.

The food, although not included with the deal, was wonderful and the staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Other Comments
The "spa" was just a pool, sauna and steam room. There wasn't the advertised Ice Fountain. There weren't even any water fountains to rehydrate. The room we stayed in was very dated.
