The 3-star Belstead Brook Muthu Hotel was once a 16th-century hunting lodge and is set among extensive gardens. It’s a 10-minute drive to Ipswich town centre and 30 minutes to the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in the heart of Constable Country (named after the painter John Constable, who painted the scenery around the River Stour).
Gainsborough’s House (once home to artist Thomas Gainsborough) and the Anglo-Saxon royal burial site of Sutton Hoo are also about half an hour’s drive away.
Back at the hotel, there’s a leisure club with an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room and a gym. Spa treatments are available on request and there’s also a baby pool. The oak-panelled Manor Restaurant serves British fare throughout the day, starting with a full English breakfast, plus kippers, porridge, yoghurt, fruit and pastries. The bar serves lighter meals in a more casual setting.
The rooms are spacious with a somewhat traditional décor, and have free Wi-Fi. There are tea- and coffee-making facilities and the upgraded rooms each have a small balcony. Ask for a garden view if possible.
