Overview
Cedar Court Hotel Harrogate is 10 minutes' walk from the centre of Harrogate -- the "quintessential Victorian spa town", according to Lonely Planet.
This Grade II-listed 19th-century building sits on the site of Harrogate's first hotel, the Queen's Head Inn, which was built in the 1680s. The Turkish Baths & Health Spa is 15 minutes' walk away, and the Royal Hall, which hosts antique fairs, classical concerts, live comedy events and more, is a little further. On the way, you'll pass the famous Bettys tea room.
Ripley and Knaresborough castles are just over 10 minutes away by car, and Harewood House takes around 15 minutes. Mother Shipton's Cave and the Petrifying Well -- one of England's oldest tourist attractions -- is 10 minutes' drive away. You can also trek with llamas at Nidderdale Llamas in the Yorkshire Dales, or visit Brimham Rocks, both about 30 minutes' drive away. Pateley Bridge, a small market town on banks of the River Nidd that's home to England's oldest sweet shop, is 30 minutes' drive.
The hotel brasserie serves British and international cuisine, and has a selection of Yorkshire cheeses. There is an on-site gym, and all guest rooms have free Wi-Fi.

The room - according to our booking confirmation this should have been an Executive room, it certainly was not what we would also an Executive room.
We also had the following issues with the room which we reported on the evening of 5th October:
When we arrived we found there was no shower head - this was rectified the same evening.
One of the bedside lights did not work - this was still not working when we left this morning.
There was no guest information in the folder.
The TV only worked intermittently.
Evening meal 5th October:
We waited over an hour for our meal after we ordered.
There were quite a few items on the menu which we were told were unavailable.
The black pudding bon bons were missing from the pork meal, when we pointed this out to who appeared to be in charge of the restaurant she went and got them and slammed them on the table, no apology.
Breakfast 6th October:
This can only be described as a complete fiasco!
First the waitress was extremely surly, she never even spoke or smiled.
The tables were not set and we had to ask for cutlery, again no apology was forthcoming.
The bacon looked raw.
The hot food e.g, beans was cold.
There were no plates and even after asking for them we had a wait until someone brought them.
The milk was still in the carton not a jug.
There was no coffee available.
We were told this morning when we checked out that there had been a staff shortage. Whilst this is acceptable we would have thought that you know how many people are staying and therefore should ensure that there are enough staff. However it is not acceptable for staff to be so bad mannered. I am sure that you will agree that this is very unsatisfactory and we would be extremely hesitant about staying again.

The room 205
According to our booking confirmation this should have been an Executive room. Our room 205 was very basic not what we were expecting from a 4 star Hotel , there were no net curtains at the window yet there was an unused rail ( net curtain was shown on the picture on your web page) . so needed to draw the full curtains in order to gain privacy to get dressed or changed making the room dark. Budget hotel rooms are better than this room .
Evening meal 5th October booked for 20:15PM
We waited over an hour for our meal after we ordered, after our order was taken after 15mins from sitting down at our table .
There were quite a few items on the menu which we were told were unavailable. With our choice of starter we wanted the Potted Shrimps & the French Apple Pie for desert .
The black pudding bon bons were missing from the pork meal, when we pointed to the waitress she had no idea was I was asking for so she called over to who appeared to be in charge of the restaurant, we told her she went and got them and slammed them on the table, no apology.
Overall Shocking service !!!!!
Bar
Ran out of the Beer I was drinking Black Sheep
Breakfast 6th October: 08:15 AM
This can only be described as a complete shambles
First the waitress was extremely surly, she never even spoke or smiled.
The tables were not set and we had to ask for cutlery twice and she continued to set other tables before ours , again no apology was forthcoming.
There were various hot item not available and had to wait sometime before they were replaced Fried Eggs , Bacon & Mushrooms
The hot food e.g, beans, sausages were cold.
Only White Sliced Bread for Toast
There were no plates, bowls or cups and even after asking for them we had a wait until someone brought them.
The milk was still in the four pint carton not a jug for the Tea /Coffee
There was no coffee available.

The rooms were comfy. The staff were lovely. The Hotel is in a very pretty location with a short stroll into town. Just perhaps need to address the food a little to bring it upto 4* standards. Sorry I don’t like giving poor reviews but on this occasion thought it might help the Hotel for future guests.
Other Comments
Some of the food quality was poor. Starters and some mains not available. Starters disappointing. We had hummus with flatbreads. No flatbread just over toasted toast and the hummus was like nothing we’ve tried before. The field mushroom on the main was also very strange in taste. The breakfast was not busy but the cooked produce was not kept topped up. No eggs no bacon. A very long wait. All little niggles but necessary to say.

On check-in the lady receptionist was uninterested and even surly as if she couldn’t be bothered. If may be because the same receptionist was on duty that evening and in the restaurant the next morning so too few staff?
The male receptionist in the morning on the other hand was bright, cheerful and helpful.
A grand hotel in many ways but let down by the small things like the waiter just putting the bottle of wine on the table but not opening or pouring and no olive oil or balsamic vinegar available for our salad.

The room was "executive double" which sounds very grand but wasn't. Rooms very dated. communal areas look better.
Breakfast was good but did not open on time and we needed to leave early. waiting staff at dinner and breakfast were quite disorganised, rushed off their feet doing more than one role.
Deal was for £50 towards dinner on first evening. we had looked in website which looked lovely. On arrival the only thing on offer was a set meal of starter and main, we had the steak for 2 meal which was literally 2 pieces of steak with chips and salad on a plate for us to serve ourself. No option for side orders. We were expecting something like chateaubriand for a price tag online of £30. Chips were not home made, always a no no in a proper restaurant.
Becks was served in a boddingtons glass and was flat.
There was a wedding on our first night, plenty of room for everyone, but to few bar staff and the restaurant was very slow. Our second night however was very good.

They have altered the breakfast since our last stay, you now get your own tea and coffee which isn’t bad but if you want to order something different like porridge then you cannot find a waitress to order with, when she did come over to our table she didn’t understand much English and I was only asking for porridge she asked me to point it out on the menu, not what you would expect from a hotel in Harrogate really

Overall the stay was just Ok, the room we were given was not a superior room as they didn’t have any with twin beds which meant I had to ask for the extras that went with a superior room, like water!!
This caused a bit of an issue but was sorted.
Our main issue was breakfasts, the food ran out, no bacon, beans, eggs, the hash browns were inedible. Only 2 staff on duty so tables weren’t cleared.

Lovely hotel with great food. Couple of negative points on this visit. At 8:15 the room cleaning staff knocked on the doors of all of the rooms in our corridor to see which they could clean. This is way too early and should be unnecessary - especially as people have to check out and ours was a late check out at 1 pm. Secondly there was no temperature control in the room and the mattress was old and uncomfortable

Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Cedar Court Hotel but there were some disappointments. We had a very long wait for a lunchtime sandwich order in the bar where, at the time, there was only one other couple besides ourselves.
We thought the restaurant menu very limited made worse by the fact that one item was already unavailable by just 7pm. The staff in the dining/breakfast room room seemed rather disinterested and unenthusiastic in their attitude. Interaction with other staff was good. Overall, our stay did not feel like a four star experience.

Room was exceptionally spacious with a firm comfortable bed and a couple of pillows. Bathroom was clean and pleasant. The curtains were thick, and shut out the early morning sun well.
The hotel faces the Stray, and is conveniently within walking distance of the city centre. i was very pleased with the superfast wifi - faster than the fibre at home.
Help your self breakfast was good, but not exceptional.
All the staff appeared to be overworked due to staff shortages, but they tried their best.

Unfortunately the restaurant let’s the hotel down.
Staff appeared to have little knowledge of food and were not coping with only a few tables being occupied. We were asked if we would like to see the dessert menu before we had our mains!!
The food was generally good but there were issues.
Breakfast was not a relaxing experience, plates were cold and we chose not to divert from what was available as following our evening experience we did not want to be waiting half an hour for poached eggs!!
Tables at breakfast were piled with dirty pots, and the layout of the restaurant is like a cafeteria, even taking into account the hotel is going through a refurb and assuming pictures will appear on the walls and other interior furnishings will soften the starkness the lay out could be better.

we checked on the web the menu choice before we booked the hotel to make sure we could order what we liked for the evening meal, we were given a totally different menu to what they advertise on there website. when I questioned it I was told the menu had been changed two weeks ago, I have checked there web site today and it is the same menu we wanted that has not been changed at all.
No greeting at breakfast and no one to tell you what breakfast arrangement were, help yourself to everything even coffee in an earn!!! cold plates and very poor quality food also I forgot to mention the chips which were served with our steaks were the cheapest thin frozen chips going. One of the hand towels had to be replace as it was covered in make up, there was one packet of biscuits for us two to share, the room was to hot and very noisy from the road, there was no seal on the shower screen so the bath room floor got flooded and this! The carpet on the landing in front of the lift was covered in black sticky tape to cover what I persumed to be a hole.

This break was booked as a surprise for a friend’s birthday and the deal expressed a Deluxe Double room with a ‘Kingsize’ bed. However, the room was small with just a double bed and no mini bar or, more importantly, air conditioning. We stayed during the hottest summer on record and sleeping was very uncomfortable - not least because there were two of us in just a double bed. Also disappointed that only porridge available on one morning of our two night stay, without any explanation or apology.

Room lacked privacy - large window at front faced straight onto lawn where there were guests enjoying a drink - no privacy curtain or blinds - only option was to shut out all natural light to get changed.
The restaurant!. At dinner, they did not have a clue either front of house or in the kitchen. Steak was ordered medium rare and ghandi's flip flop arrived. Thinnest steak I have ever seen - if that was 12oz then I am 7 ft tall. It was no better at breakfast. Either short staffed or poor training - basics - e.g no clean tables despite only half occupied, no plates to get hot breakfast and at one point only 3 of the 6 hot items were available. Croissants looked good but the plain one was dry/stale and the pain au choc was uncooked in the centre - raw dough!

We have stayed before many times when this was best western and always enjoyed our stay. We gave it a try last time through travel zoo and it was not a good experience. However we thought we would give it one more try. So we booked a superior room. When we arrived the reception we were a little early. The receptionist said we could check in then if we paid an additional £10.00. I explained I had already paid extra for an upgrade and that although we had late checkout we would be leaving early. Despite this she would not let us check in without the extra payment. I also asked if the room type was the same and she said just the same.
At dinner we waited 30/40 minutes for our starters. When the mains arrived (sea bass) it was a small piece of fish engulfed by an enormous amount of very hard green beans.
We used to like staying at th Cedar Court when it was best western. Unfortunately we will not stay again unless there are big improvements.

We felt sorry for the staff as it was being run on a tight budget. The meal was ok but we shared a steak and it was very tough. It was not the chefs fault it was prepared and cooked nicely. There was little help in the dining room and it was full.Ran by one waitress who took the orders and arranged seating and another assistant. The meal was slow but the chef had done a good job.Breakfast was self service buffet and the food wasn't great.Minimal toiletries in room.Had to ask for more.Lots of deals were happening at this hotel by different companies and you couldn't help but feel sorry for the staff ,it was run at their expense and felt like a tourist operation.

When we arrived our room was at the back overlooking a car park with a big bunch of motors running underneath. Couldn’t leave windows open because of the noise, far to hot to sleep. My husband called it a premier inn room with less of the room. We had booked an executive room as it was our anniversary and I wanted to treat my husband, I do not have lots of money and usually look for a bargain. We were moved to a bigger room, after I complained, nice size. I had to ask several times for decaf coffee for the room. Only allowed to leave one when cleaning. Gin and tonic and a pint of bitter £13. It was a nice place , but creaky floor boards and prices high.

The only comment we would make is that the staff waiting on in the resturant seemed a bit disorganised, I would guess that they had not been properly trained. We had to ask them to clear our table after each course, then we had to ask for coffee, it was if they were oblivious to what was happening on each table. One diner asked three different members of staff for extra parmesan cheese which he never got.

Food options for dinner weren't great and I really wasn't catered for at all.
The room was comfortable and the view across The Stray was lovely. Though the room had been refurbished, it had obviously been done to a budget and it felt a bit cheap. That said, everything worked, was spotlessly clean and was well stocked. Being the little walk out of town meant it was gloriously quiet in the night and first thing in the morning. The town is 10 minutes walk the short way or 20 minutes the long way - actually enjoyed the walk and went the long way.

On our confirmation of booking form it was stated that £22 per person to spend on a starter and main course in the porterhouse restaurant. But they had a specific short menu for Travelzoo customers only and the choice was minimal and the items were not priced. Breakfast on the first day was fine, but on the second day the fresh bread was so stale that I could not even cut it. (it was really hard). The toiletries in the bathroom was minimal. Lucky I took our own. (only 1 shampoo and 1 showergel 1 bar of small soap) The furniture in the room is dated, but it is an old hotel. The staff were very friendly and nice.

The location was perfect as it is so close to the town without being in the middle. Such a pity about the lack of training as it could be so good.
Other Comments
The staff had obviously never been trained. When serving arms went across in front of you even if you were eating and there was enough space to walk around. The food was very poor. If we wanted a drink in the evening we had to hunt for someone to serve us. There were very few smiles from the staff so they are obviously not happy.

We have stayed many times at this hotel when it was best western and always had a nice room. We booked an executive room. The room looked onto the car park. The glazing in the window had broken down. Comfortable and spic and span room on second floor. Comfy bed and efficient bathing facilities with lovely large towels .Pretty view through very large bay window over garden and parkland and beautiful cedar tree just outside our window. Two days breakfasts were really good and the cooked food was hot. Evening meal was reasonable and the steak I had was beautiful but my partner's duck was a rather tough for a 'slow cooked' bird. All in all though a lovely stay with friendly and helpful staff. A good base for visiting other nearby treasures of north Yorkshire and we did.

We upgraded from the deal, and it was well worth it. Lovely big room with front view across the park. Not noisy from outside at all. Evening meal was very good value. Choice of starters and main course, then you could pay for a sweet if you wish. Wine was reasonable. Restaurant manager excellent food came hot and was good. Only down side our upgrade was suppose to include fruit in our room. This was missing and never materialised. However we liked the room and evening was good.

Breakfast was a mess! We had to queue for ages to get a table, not because the restaurant was full but no one was clearing tables. Eventually we got a table only to find there was no breakfast left! Orange juice down to last glass, no cereal bowls and after asking three times and waiting ten or more minutes soup bowls appeared. Although the buffet containers were out on a long table what cooked food available was on a small table up a corner, people waited very disgruntled for fifteen minutes at a a time. Yoghurt had gone, we got so fed up we settled for cereal, pain a chocolate and two potatoes hash browns in a soup bowl. Bearing in mind this was nine o clock and breakfast was supposed to go on till 10.30. Every one moaning not a good start to the day. We then went to pay our bill and stood fifteen minutes while the only person behind the desk successfully ignored us. I eventually asked another member of staff walking by to get us some attention. By now eight other people were trying to pay their bill and again everyone moaning.
An excellent looking hotel spoilt by bad staff. Mostly foreign with not good understanding of English. Please sort out would love to return as we love Harrogate and this hotel is well situated.

We had a single friend with us who booked the same DBB deal we did. She understood she was paying for single occupancy of a double room, but it seemed a bit unfair she was paying the same as us for one meal and breakfast to our two! Surely it wouldn't be out of the question to offer a free dessert or drink in lieu of this exploitation of singles? When she asked if this would be possible she was politely but firmly rebuffed.

The deal specified that we would have £22 per person to spend on our dinner in the Porterhouse Restaurant . Before booking we studied the menu online. It was quite impressive and we were looking forward to an enjoyable evening meal aware that we would probably have had to add to our £22 however when we arrived at the restaurant we were offered a set menu with some choices which had no resemblance to the online menu. We were hugely disappointed and made that clear at the time.

Constant sleep disturbances, no soundproofing onto outside corridor, constant noise of doors slamming due to poor fitting door locks.
Evening meal was choices from set menu, I was under impression we would have £22.00 allowance towards a la Carte menu.
Service at breakfast, on the Saturday morning was atrocious. We were told to sit at any available table, most were full of dirty plates and only table available was set for six people, which we were forced to share with other guests.
On checking out we were not asked about any problems, staff only interested in settling bill.

Breakfast was a little chaotic. With the clocks going forward that day, everyone seemed to head down for breakfast a little later. (9-10am) and the dining room was struggling to cope. Lacked soul, very large hotel with little character. Room was cold and outdated. Was charge twice through some sort of clerical error. Breakfast was a bit hit and miss as was the evening meal. My wife's dessert was actually nasty. We had booked for relatives to join us however they were unable to attend through illness, the hotel was informed 4 days beforehand and said there was nothing they could do, tried again on arrival to move dates so they could come another time when they felt better. Hotel refused so effectively lost two days booking for relatives, told to claim on travel insurance. Not helpful really, more importantly was their lack of understanding.

The Travelzoo offer clearly states that you will receive:
"£22 per person to spend on a starter and a main course in the Porterhouse Restaurant (first night only)"
Yet, the menu for all 3 nights we were there was the same fixed price £20 per head menu with limited choices, rather than being able to choose from the menu that they have on line:
https://www.cedarcourthotels.co.uk/uploads/files/Food%20%26%20Drink/Harr_menu_may17.pdf
I asked twice if the fixed price menu was the right one for us and also asked directly to see the "a la carte" menu as we had hoped to have the "21oz Chateaubriand for two to share" and pay any difference, but we were told "we don't do that menu anymore, we used to a long time ago...."
OK, I thought well at least I hope they knock the additional £4 off the drinks bill, but no such luck, all drinks (which are on the steep side here) were billed.
Bottom line is, they didn't deliver the offer as marketed and so I am disappointed and feel that there is some misrepresentation going on here. I will be making this same complaint directly to Travelzoo.

The service in the evening by the catering staff was extremely poor. We had to wait over half an hour for them to take our order (unless we hadn't asked I'm not sure they would have taken it at all!) and it took another hour or so for our meal to be served. All the customers in the restaurant were complaining or walking out without receiving their meal (which we had all paid for via the travelzoo offer) which made the atmosphere in the restaurant uneasy and uncomfortable. When the meal arrived it wasn't as hot as I would have expected. We were starving by this time so ate it anyway. Very disappointing when we were looking forward to a stress free, relaxing weekend away..

Having previously stayed at the hotel and been very happy with the rooms this time we were offered an old room that had not been updated, room 415. When we complained we were told the hotel was fully booked and no other rooms available. As we were about to leave two other rooms were found though we were warned they could be noisy due to Christmas parties. We took one room 339. The room was adequately equipped but very cold. We have never had a problem with room temperature at this hotel previously. We asked for an extra room heater. At this point different staff were on reception and we were offered to move to another room and were given two others to look at but they were cold too.The food in the restaurant was very good however we did not get offered the sparkling wine as per the deal. The following day we decided to cut our losses and went home. Shame that we were really looking forward to this break before Christmas and it was spoilt.

Good value at £149 for 2 nights' B&B and one evening meal.

We were in room 316. The beds weren't the most comfortable we've had on trips away. All the pillows were thin but two together was too thick. The evening meal (fish and chips) wasn't qute right; chips too thick and not cooked through. Batter on fish geasy and fish didn't seem to be flaky/cooked. Housekeeping staff helpful. The room was clean but the decor "tired".

Good location, easy access to town centre. Ample parking.

Cooked breakfast was a little anemic / under done for my taste. Juices had run out, had to ask twice for refill. Coffee served to table was not hot from pots that had been sat on a side. Not a complaint, it appeared to be quite busy.

Nice old building. Food was well cooked mostly. Good Travel Zoo deal.

We were made welcome and all staff were very pleasant but sadly few trained in their craft. Not a clue on how to serve drinks etc. A little staff training by someone who knows about serving food and drink would make this an excellent hotel.
