With an imposing façade, soaring staircases and Chesterfield armchairs, York's Grange Hotel is full of character and flourishes reminiscent of a bygone era. The Grade II-listed property dates back to 1829 and is only a 5-minute walk from the city walls, in a location that The Daily Telegraph says is "pretty unbeatable".

York Minster, one of the largest medieval cathedrals in northern Europe, is 10 minutes' walk from the hotel. York's Chocolate Story is also around 10 minutes' walk away. Visitors can take a guided tour to discover the part chocolate has played in York's history. Other attractions such as the National Railway Museum, Clifford's Tower and the Jorvik Viking Centre are all within 20 minutes' walk.

Further afield, the impressive Castle Howard estate is a 35-minute drive away, while the North York Moors National Park and the seaside town of Scarborough are just over an hour away.

The hotel's Ivy Brasserie has two AA Rosettes and offers "fine dining in a lavishly decorated environment" (The AA). The restaurant, which serves classic dishes with a French influence, is in the cellars of the hotel.

Staff friendly, a good relaxed atmosphere, excellent food and a nice touch with fresh milk in fridge for drinks in the room. On the Saturday night I did not sleep much due to noise from other guests and road noise, I told receptionist next day who told me they had a wedding on, apologising and if I return in future to ask for a room on the back away from the road. I got some ear plugs and slept on the Sunday night.

Everything and everyone was lovely except for the lady with the red hair who was on reception when we arrived on January 18 th at around 6 pm. She was unfriendly and unhelpful.

Very friendly helpful reception on arrival, a lovely warm homely atmosphere. Olde worlde throughout the hotel but perfectly decorated & kept clean. Our rooms were cosy with everything we needed, room safe, tea tray etc. beds were lovely & comfy slept soundly. Good separate shower plus bath. The Ivy Brassiere within the hotel was perfect, our set menu meal was very appetising. Breakfast again was delicious & plentiful with lots of choice. A great overnight stay & wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this lovely hotel to anyone. 10 mins walk into York city centre but far enough away for peace too. Thank you to the attentive smiling staff of The Grange Hotel.
