With an imposing façade, soaring staircases and Chesterfield armchairs, York’s Grange Hotel is full of character and flourishes reminiscent of a Jane Austen novel. The grade-II listed property dates back to 1829 and is only a 5-minute walk from the city walls. The Daily Telegraph says it’s a “pretty unbeatable” location.
Local attractions such as the York Minster cathedral, the National Railway Museum, Clifford’s Tower, and the Jorvik Viking Centre are all within a 20-minute walk. Further afield, the impressive Castle Howard house and estate are a 35-minute drive, while the North York Moors National Park and the seaside town of Scarborough are just over an hour away.
The hotel’s Ivy Restaurant has two AA-Rosettes and offers “fine dining in a lavishly decorated environment” (The AA Hotel Guide 2016). Expect dishes such as pea and fresh truffle risotto with sautéed mushrooms, roast rump of lamb, and chateaubriand. The Brasserie in the vaulted cellar was once a World War II air raid shelter, but now serves a more informal menu than the Ivy.
There are 36 bedrooms, all of which have free WiFi, tea and coffee-making facilities, and mineral water and fresh milk in the mini bar. Expect thoughtful touches in the wardrobes, such as full-length mirrors and umbrellas to borrow. Upgrade to a 4-poster room or the Ebor room for a more decadent décor. A lift is due to be added in early 2016, but in the meantime there are rooms on the ground floor for those with mobility requirements.
