The Grade II-listed Churchill Hotel is a 19th-century property set in its own grounds in the city of York. The hotel, recently refurbished, was once a school, then a government building (the Prince of Wales -- later King Edward VII -- stayed here) before becoming a hotel in 1985.

The hotel sits outside the bustle and noise of the very heart of York but is still within easy walking distance of many of the city’s attractions. York Minster, the city walls and Betty’s Café and Tea Rooms are all less than 10 minutes away on foot, while the Jorvik Viking Centre is only 5 minutes further. Want to explore the wider area? The North York Moors are an hour or so away by car.

York has plenty of restaurants, but you’ll probably want to try the hotel’s brasserie -- it has 2 AA Rosettes and a menu offering dishes such as venison pastrami with salt-baked celeriac, and roast mutton loin with apricots an polenta. The Wellington Bar offers more casual fare -- sandwiches and burgers -- and also serves craft beers and a collection of gins and vodkas from around the world.

Style-wise, the hotel blends “period features and artefacts relating to Winston Churchill” alongside “contemporary design and up-to-date technology” (The AA Hotel Guide 2015). Rooms are individually designed and come with free WiFi -- some also feature 4-poster beds, drench showers, roll-top baths and Duck Island toiletries. Upgrade to the Prince of Wales Suite, where the man himself stayed in 1898, for a spacious room with high ceilings and arched bay windows.
