Set on the banks of the River Foss in York, the 4-star Novotel York Centre hotel is housed in a red-brick building, a short riverside stroll from York city centre. As well as a stylish bar with a terrace overlooking the river, the hotel has a heated indoor pool, plus indoor and outdoor playgrounds for children, so it’s perfect for a family city break.
York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, is just 15 minutes’ walk from the hotel, while the York Castle Museum -- which documents the city’s social and military history and is housed in a former prison -- is even closer. Still not enough history for you? Visit the Jorvik Viking Castle (a 10-minute walk) to see the remains of 1000-year-old Viking houses and take a tour of a reconstructed Viking settlement. Further afield, the North York Moors and the seaside resorts of Scarborough and Bridlington are around an hour away by car.
York has plenty of restaurants but if you’re back at base, the hotel has an international restaurant with a varied menu. Standout dishes include chipotle prawn tacos with fennel seed and mustard confit, carrots and apple purée; tuna burgers; and a selection of British cheeses served with fig jam and Swedish crisp breads.
Bedrooms feature free WiFi, flat-screen TVs and laptop-sized safes, as well as sofa beds, so they are all large enough to sleep two adults and one child. Upgraded Executive Rooms also come with mineral water, bathrobes, slippers, a Nespresso machine and a Bose iPod docking station.
