"Stunning location. Friendly welcome. All staff very helpful. Exceptional food. Really recommend the Best end of lamb and the cherry parfait was to die for! Will definitely go back."
Carbis Bay Hotel was built in 1894, and sits on a hillside above its own white-sand Blue Flag beach. The hotel was the inspiration for The Sands Hotel in the novels of Rosamunde Pilcher, and Virginia Woolf -- a former guest -- is said to have used Godrevy Lighthouse across the bay as her inspiration for To the Lighthouse.
St Ives -- a "pretty jumble of slate roofs, church towers and turquoise bays" (Lonely Planet), that is home to Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum -- is 20 minutes away by bus. You can also walk into town in about 30 minutes along the South West Coast Path, which runs past the hotel. St Michael's Mount and Penzance are within 25 minutes' drive.
Facilities within the "handsome 125-acre estate" (The Daily Telegraph) include the C Bay Spa, which has a 5-bubble rating from the Good Spa Guide, a heated outdoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a sauna pod and a Ruinart champagne bar. There is also an accredited watersports centre, where you can hire canoes and paddleboards for an extra cost.
The fine-dining Sands Restaurant serves seafood that arrives daily from fishing boats in St Ives, and you can sip a cocktail, cognac or champagne at the bar while watching the sun set over the sea. The Beach Club Restaurant and The Conservatory both serve lighter bites in a more casual environment. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.

Booked a two night deal through travelzoo with dinner on first night. Great value all round and easy access to St Ives which we both walked and later travelled by train. My only beef was that we had a superior room with view over the gardens but I don't think our view matched expectations and was overlooking the back of rooms being worked on. No problem though and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We went back to Carbis Bay Hotel as we we had dinner in the beautiful Sands Restaurant. This was definitely the reason for our return. When we went for dinner we were squashed into a different room as they had an event in the main restaurant. It was a shame we weren’t told this on booking. The food was very good though.

The room was supposed to be double superior with garden view. We got a very small family room with side sea view. We were not impressed with the room, as paper peeling off wall in some places, single glazing so quite cold. The bathroom was brand new but with a high disabled toilet fitted. I didn’t understand this as it was not a disabled room, it was on the top floor and no lift, we upgraded the room for our 2nd and 3rd nights which was much more comfortable.

Room 308 is not fit for clients, it overlooks the car park and directly above goods in area, the noise never lets up during the working day . to top it off a path runs up past the window and people look directly into the room , the drapes must be kept drawn until you are fully dressed . SHOCKING . We requested to be moved to another room but nothing was done . Waste of my money and a insult .

The staff were very polite and friendly. We were offered a upgrade when we checked in. From superior room to a cottage . The cottage was lovely but we missed being in the main building. Didn’t use the pool spa etc as we had to walk about 300 yds from cottage to main hotel building. Not something you want to do on a winters day in your swim suit and robe. So think the hotel was obviously overbooked when we arrived. Had to go outside to walk for breakfast dinner etc!!

Disappointing. Our garden view room was VERY small and looked out onto a roof with a few pots. Hardly anywhere to put luggage. Tea/coffee facilities were stored on a shelf in the wardrobe! You could not sit on the toilet without bruising your knees, the space was that tight. Consequently the toilet seat swivelled sideways every time you sat down. The dinner included was great, the location is wonderful, but awkward to get to, but not very good value overall considering how small the room was. Also, no lift, so a lot of older people were huffing and puffing on the stairs. No clear signage about how to get to the pool and spa.

On the whole we enjoyed our stay at the Carbis Bay Hotel, the food was excellent and also the staff were efficient and very pleasant. The carparking is very tight and not really enough spaces. We did book a superior garden room but thought that this stretched the imagination somewhat. The main hotel could do with some tlc and we overlooked a small area of grass and the back of the spa. We could constantly hear an air conditioning unit all day and night so this was rather disappointing!

Apparently this hotel has received awards this year. I booked a room here specifically requesting a quiet room and was hopeful when told all of their rooms were quiet (I have this in writing via email). This was unfortunately not the case. When allocating guests a room who have requested a quiet room please do not;
1- allocate them next to the stairs where footfall is loud and high in volume from other guests
2-allocate then next to a fire door which bangs every time other guests need to access that floor
3-allocate then a room facing the Trainline which runs along the back of the hotel
4-omit to tell them upon booking that a wedding party had been scheduled and will obviously impact on the sound, with disco noise heard throughout the hotel until midnight
5-allocate then near to an area where bins being dragged across a pathway can be heard
6-allocate then a room directly above the noisy bar area, with guests taking advance until around 2am
Even the spa was disappointing with just 1 toilet and shower in male/female changing rooms and only 6 lockers in each. I spoke to 4 guests alone who unfortunately could not have a locker as they were all in use. With just 12 in total I guess that’s not a surprise for all hotel guests, day spa guests considered.
We spent an amazing week in a cottage before staying at Carbis Bay, with the hotel being a special birthday surprise for my husband and an indulgent (££) end to our holiday. I truly wish we’d have stayed at the cottage. I really hoped Carbis Bay was going to be a great hotel, unfortunately for us on this occasion it was not.

We arrived to be shown around and then taken to our room which was 117 and could have been the broom cupboard but was not a superior room. That night we ate in the dining room and the food and service was excellent. We had no sleep that night as our room was directly above the swimming pool extractor we think and it was noisy all night. We complained in the morning and we were moved to 201 which was much better. We ate that night in the conservatory and the service was pretty poor. There were four of us and we started at 7pm but one of the guests was still waiting for a cheese board at 21.40 and had to ask three times for it

I telephoned them on Sunday 4th August to say my husband had been taken into A & E and we would have to cancel. They told me someone would call me back. They didn't. I rang again on Tuesday 6th to ask why no one had called. They said they didn't have a record of my phone call and they had put us down as a 'no show'. That made me really cross. I told them that my husband had a heart attack on Tuesday and would it be possible for a refund. They were very offhand in their manner and they then said 'no they couldn't' and then they said 'as a gesture of goodwill they would keep the £199 on hold for us to put 'towards' a visit another time.' My husband is still in hospital and who knows whether he will be able to drive again so it looks unlikely that we will be going to Cornwall. I think they could at least have refunded for the food that we didn't eat.

I am 77 and have difficulty negotiating many stairs - the 'attic room' - 219 - was at very top of the building - not mentioned when booking. It did not have ANY windows (neither did the en suite) - only one set of patio doors which had to be left open as the room/en suite was otherwise hot and stuffy. We were then in full view of residents/workmen/visitors of cottages behind - especially when visiting en suite!!!. Receptionist was curt on arrival, after long hot drive, with "check in is 3pm". We had to sit on beach in our hot traveling clothes until 3pm. However another lady staff member made our day the next day, by driving us a short distance in her own car up to the station. She was wonderful. We would NEVER accept room 219 or any top floor room again.

It benefits from great location, but car park can be extremely busy, so try to reserve, Also their new buildings in front of main building do detract from views of the bay. It is very easy and quick to visit St Ives by regular train service from nearby Station. Try a days Rover ticket to travel the whole line - wonderful views.

The once very grand Carbis bay hotel is looking very dated and tired now and urgently needs upgrading. The newly built lodges and function suite on the beach only serve to highlight this further. Better than anticipated. On arrival we were offered an upgrade from a superior room to an apartment with a sea view. Accommodation was wonderful and food exceptional. we enjoyed a wowcher break with this hotel for our wedding anniversary. it was somewhere i have always wanted to go and stay and it didn't disappoint me. from the greeting from the reception to the goodbye when we left, everything was excellent. we were upgraded to an outside apartment, which was a treat , the beds were super comfortable. our prosecco when we arrived was a lovely start to our weekend, the pool was warm, the jacuzzi was superb and the weather was beautiful. our meal in the evening you couldn't fault, from the attentive staff to the gorgeous food, everything was wonderful. breakfast was lots of choice, and again, we couldn't fault anything. we will hopefully return one day.

initially we were located in the cottage up the hill from the hotel. Not what we wanted as my wife has back problems. When we complained they gave us a room on the 2nd floor of the hotel with no lift. The room had a nice side view of the sea but with noise from the extractor fan of the Spa below. Lucky we are not light sleepers. The hotel is in a fantastic position overlooking the sandy bay and has a small pool with sun loungers. The food was good and the staff excellent and very helpful. We would book again if we saw the right deal. St Ives is a 3 minute train journey away (the Carbis Bay station is up a steep hill) and the St Ives train station is just a few minutes walk from the harbour. We were glad that we did not have to drive as the streets are narrow and parking an iisue. All told we had an enjoyable and relaxing stay.

Room booked was supposed to be ‘ superior ‘ I believe it must have been part of the servants quarters when first built, as you opened the bedroom door you had to climb very steep stairway 8 steps to your sleeping area, it was a very comfortable king size bed with very little room for anything else, a small en-suite limited wardrobe space, with only very small drawers in the bedside tables for all other items of clothing. Very claustrophobic, noisy each night when the empty bar bottles where moved below our room. Railway line running just above the hotel . Newspaper ordered but failed to appear. Not very impressed at all.

It took forever to order our dinner choices. We were early for our 18.45 table, so we’re encouraged to have a drink. We sat in their conservatory , with our bottle of wine, and had to ask for the menus at 19.00. After 10 minutes we asked to sit at our table and the menu was presented again, and we still had to ask to give our order,
After that all staff were very attentive and charming, BUT, we did feel that we had been ignored for being early.

There seemed to be a lack of care & service from the reception staff. Arriving after a tiring journey with a sore damaged hip I just wanted to rest & was limping badly. Instead we were made to walk up a steep hill to accommodation away from the hotel. ( a superior room inside the hotel was on our travelzoo invoice). This alternative was out of the question due to the pain I was suffering- we had told the receptionist about it before she walked us there. So we said this accommodation was out of the question & they then placed us in a room at the top of the building (no lift). Which we had to accept. I also found a similar lack of caring in the spa & pool area although to a lesser scale. It was probably just thoughtlessness by the staff and not malicious but I often felt embarrassed & uncomfortable. Not The kind of service I have experienced at other hotels. Probably needs better staff awareness training. Otherwise the stay was faultless as has been all other travelzoo deals I’ve experienced.

We had booked a room in the hotel for two nights as a treat to ourselves during our annual getaway (our only time during the year when we get to leave the 4 kids at home) On arrival we were told we had been given an "upgrade" to an apartment...however due to the fact that the apartment was not in the hotel, nor was it just a room that we had been wanting, this completely destroyed the atmosphere of our getaway and left us feeling let down/disappointed. We had been looking forward to our time in the hotel as we only get this luxury once a year, and when this booking was not honoured, it certainly didn't feel like the upgrade it was meant to be.

The first room we were offered was a health and safety nightmare, is was very small with an open staircase to the room door only a meter from the side of the bed. We did request another room and got on immediately. The furniture in the conservatory was filthy with unknown stains. The Maitre D took our lunch order of two rounds of sandwich’s and for £17 I would have expected the table to have been cleaned. Seriously overpriced in my opinion.

Some aspects of this hotel are great. We were moved to a family room at the back with a balcony away from the noise of the restaurant fan outside and then were asked if we wanted to move to a sea view as there was no WiFi in the back room despite the quiet. We stayed in the room at the back as it was much larger despite missing out on a great view.
It’s a great view generally, relaxed, and slightly jaded in parts in the rooms. The staff are professional particularly in the restaurant. We were told by reception that the WiFi would be sorted out never to hear from them again but who cares with that location. The best aspect was the pool and large hot jacuzzi overlooking the ocean.
The food was great. I may be missing something but the size of the portions is very small for 60 quid for 3 courses. For us that’s not being cheffy it’s just being stingy. It will certainly save them money. A 15 pounds starter the size of my thumb nail isn’t just pretentious it’s mean.
We felt the blonde receptionist this morning could have asked us if we had enjoyed our stay. Very basic client oriented politeness.
All in all lovely place from which to say goodbye to West Cornwall.
Thank you.

Unhelpful and abrupt female restaurant manager, dreadful Spa changing room for expensive treatments, had to walk through restaurant in Spa dressing gown to go to room to get changed whilst people were having lunch as only one person could use shower and have the room required to change, no privacy, food disappointing, raw mushrooms at breakfast, over cooked batter with dry tasteless fish at dinner, asked to change tables at dinner told no despite plenty of empty tables and then when asked, informed abruptly, fully booked, we booked our table 4 months in advance, had to eat dinner with staff brushing past either side of our table consistently, to close to other tables so no privacy for conversation so rushed our meal to get away as soon as we could as could not relax, light bulbs in room corridors were out and not changed in three days, dirty glasses left in corridor, room coffee cups not cleaned and tea/coffee not replenished, view of beech spoilt by new apartments, noise from building works, no atmosphere in bar and conservatory far to hot to eat breakfast and afternoon tea, sun in my eyes the whole time. Sun loungers need pads as not comfortable. Reception welcome friendly but no greeting from staff as you walked past, miserable faces, weddings take priority, could not use the beech restaurant as advertised as booked out for private party. Tv in room too small and in a silly location, had to move bed to watch it. Not a deluxe hotel as sold.

Our room. Had I paid the full, listed price for our room I would have been asking for my money back. I’d requested a twin, superior room but was given a room with a king size bed and a small, child size bed in an alcove. Our ‘superior’ room did not resemble the online photo. The furniture was old, dark and needed replacing. There was no wardrobe, just a very small built in cupboard with those very annoying hangers that have to be unhooked, so they can’t be stolen. However the worse fact was that our room was above a very noisy industrial, extractor unit next to the kitchen. The noise was constant and the unit wasn’t switched off until 1.30 am on the second night and 11pm the first night. When we were shown the room on arrival I asked if they had an alternative because of the noise. I was shown a classic room which was small, dark and overlooked a hedge of brambles and foliage. I declined this. The Travelzoo deal I had booked a few months previously stated a Superior room with a sea or garden view. We did have a partial sea view which was appreciated. The bathroom was ‘tired’ with cracked bath panels. I am a petite lady but my knees almost touched the side of the bath when sitting on the loo, goodness knows how a large man coped. I am a vegetarian/vegan which I had stated on my Travelzoo booking form. However the 2 vegetarian main course options were inedible. Both over fussy with no substance. The grated carrot rosti was smothered with green pesto and chopped tomatoes and very greasy. I sent it back. The second night I had a large plate of penne pasta with some tiny pieces of fried onion and bits of mushroom in it. I had declined the creme fraiche dressing. There are many vegan options to creme . There are millions of vegetarians and vegans in the UK so the chef needs to do some culinary homework. The vegetarian sausage at breakfast was tasteless and probably the cheapest on the market. I can recommend alternatives as I’ve been a vegetarian for 47 years.

Room was not as advertised. They ended up putting us in a self catering apartment which was yes, next to the beach but a few minutes walk from the hotel facilities. The apartment was quite old but I managed to sort out the heating, the boiler was actually switched off. The plug in the bath did not seat properly meaning the water would run out before it could fill up.
Also we were not informed about the inclusive dinner while booking in and when j broughtbit up was actually booked into the wrong restaurant. Very disappointed with this experience.

The location is great, however, the owners are currently completing the building of a block of apartments on the beach front which, once complete, will really spoil the view of the hotel from the beach and vice versa. I would think that some of the rooms that have a sea view now will lose that view when the new blocks are complete

The bed in our room wasn't that comfortable, it was a queen size with two single matress' rather than one. We were very disappointed with our check out. There were additional items added to our bill that weren't ours. It was quite clear to see that they weren't ours because they were for items purchased at the same time but in different restaurants in the hotel. Rather than dealing with this after we had left, the receptionist had us wait in reception for at least 10 minutes while she checked it out with the restaurant Manager. For such an exclusive hotel as this, she should have accepted our word, after all they did take a scan of our credit card when we arrived which is their standard practice, rather than keep us waiting.

The hotel is currently a building site, the first room we were offered was too small, we couldnot get a booking in resturant, the food choice and quality was poor , the carparking was difficult and on made up land, the staff were OK. Receptionist a bit frosty. Asked if we would like to book a table for dinner and advised that only had 6pm or 8.45pm. I said that was too early and too late and she said we should have had an email from the hotel advising to book. I said that I didn’t have any email from the hotel and she said no we wouldn’t have as we booked through a third party and that they wouldn’t of had my details despite the hotel calling me on the day I had booked. Anyway they sorted a table for us for 7.30 but the start of our celebration week was already soured. Rooms are looking very tired and need some refurbishment. Spa was great as was the member of staff working there. Staff in the restaurant needed a special mention as they were fantastic and made the stay for us.

We asked to be re located as the room was outside of the kitchen exhaust ventilation system, we moved to a quiet room on the other side of the hotel, unfortunately we had no light in the table lamp, the tap in the bathroom was broke and no slippers were provided, we were made to wait 65 minutes for our main course which the waitress apologised on several occasions, apart from that we had a lovely time on my birthday and yes we will return.

We were in a refurbished room 102 which was lovely. Our only negative point was that the mattress was so firm that we didn't sleep well at all. Also, on Saturday 1st December there was a Christmas party so the place was absolutely rammed and you couldn't get to the bar to order a drink. In the morning, there were Christmas songs being played from 7.30am which was a little early for a Sunday! We did bring this to their attention by leaving a message at reception but it continued...!!

The new building right on the beach is a monstrosity. This is sheer greed from the owners. It was initially refused planning permission, but as always money speaks loudest. The privately owned beach was totally unspoilt, with other buildings on the hillside nestling into the contours. The new building totally changes the view of the beach from the hotel and the sea view bedrooms, even on the top floor. Locals call it "the factory". Bigger, better (very very questionable!), more, more, more is the nature of the game it would seem. What a huge shame for this otherwise superb hotel. I would only recommend the hotel cautiously to others because of these reservations about the new building

We didn't enjoy that our 'SUPERIOR ROOM' was right next to a fan from the Spa, which was extremely noisy. We were offered a move of rooms, but it didn't have the sea view, BUT we were told by the receptionist that the fan stopped at 9pm and didn't restart until 9am the next day. At 11pm that evening we had to call down to receptionist to ask if it could be turned off, it did. But it came on way before 9am the next morning. The same thing happened the next night = very disappointing as we were there for a couples escape. We also had to move the table in the room and found a chocolate left by the previous occupants. We left it there, it was still there the next day...disappointing.

Generally the building is "tired" looking and my room was disappointing. Nice bed linen & shower but not as welcoming as I would have liked. No-one visible in a management role overseeing things. Not up to its claim to be luxury. Also, as with many establishments, they need to learn to accept and welcome single travellers - I felt at times as if I must have two heads when it was obvious they found it strange I was on my own!!

Although the hotel is lovely and the food excellent we where very disappointed that our room was not ‘superior’ as detailed on their website, the staff where very good but I was disappointed to be given a scaled down menu when we gave our room number the people at the next table had the full version that I looked at previously. We were only at the hotel for one night en route to the Isles of Scilly so not much time to explore. The only downside was the evening meal which consisted of mainly spicy food, including the soup, with almost no other choice. No good if just wanted 'normal' fare. Our main fish course, which was served at the table in what looked like 'boil in the bag' was also very spicy so not overly impressed with this. Hopefully better choice of different foods in the future.

When we arrived we were told we had been upgraded to a room with a seaview and balcony. Room 208 proved to be very compact. The door to the ensuite almost touched the end of the bed when opened. The shower was over the bath and there was little space to dry off between the loop and washbasin. The shower lever was broken and really the whole bathroom was in need of refurbishment. The balcony and seaview did compensate for the small room to an extent, but I would want to upgrade if staying longer than a few nights. Hotel was in a great location with easy walk into St Ives along coastal path. Building work still in progress in front of hotel which spoils the view of the beach somewhat, but maybe it will blend in more once finished.

My wife and I recently stayed in the hotel for 6 nights on a Travelzoo deal the price was discounted which I realise was due to the major extension work being carried out on the beach. After years of admiring the hotel and calling in for drinks and lunches in the conservatory we were looking forward to our stay in the hotel.
The reason for our visit was to relax and enjoy our holiday and not to continually complain, I therefore felt that the best way to highlight the issues we encountered was to post this honest review in order for anyone contemplating staying in this hotel will have an insight as to what to expect.
The greatest asset for this hotel is the location, which in our opinion has been blemished by the extension which has now restricted views of the beach and bay from the terraces and the hotel.
Room 202 which was supposed to be a superior room with a garden view, was very small with a view over the car park. After looking at room images on the hotel web site the room the was clearly a classic room, when I asked a member of the reception team if the room was a superior I was told in no uncertain terms that it was.
My wife went back to our room a couple of days in the afternoon to rest but found it impossible due to the banging etc emanating from the renovation work being carried out in one of the rooms below ours.
We were told that the tablet in our room could be used to carry out a number of tasks one of which was the facility to reserve a table for the evening meal, however the times available for selection were hourly with no opportunity to reserve times in between each hour. When reserving a table with either reception or restaurant staff time slots were limited to either 18:00 to 18:30 or very late in the evening.
The laminated tokens for the free glass of house wine (which you couldn’t use after 18:00) were typical for budget not a four-star hotel.
Food portions were adequate apart from breakfast which I go into further detail below, menu choices were okay for a two- or three-night stay but are not sufficient for longer stays, in fact on our last night we decided that we could not face another evening attempting to choose from the standard or special menus and ate out at a local restaurant. Breakfast (Carbis Bay Grill) portions were scant, half a mushroom, half a tomato one egg, sausage and rasher of bacon, smoked salmon is an extra five pounds!
Parking was not easy, how easy it will be once all the building work has been finished will be interesting to see as I believe it will be as chaotic as it is at present, I need to be convinced that I am wrong in my belief.
Referring back to the tablet in our room, the checkout facility was not working, I believe this tablet facility is in its Beta stage and is not fully functional.
To conclude other hotels in the area, manage to get everything right first time, why can’t Carbis Bay Estate?
