"Lovely place the grounds are wonderful and it’s elevated position over the beach is amazing . The food in the sands restaurant is outstanding great choice and presentation was perfect, tasted great too. The room was small and although it had a great view of the beach was very noisy and smelly as the extractor fan from the kitchen was just below the window we didn’t complain as we were not in the room much but if we were and you wanted to relax in your room 213 wouldn’t be a my choice. Bar and restaurant staff very friendly and attentive only on one occasion did we have to wait at breakfast for our order to be taken, all in all a fabulous week."

Overview

Carbis Bay Hotel was built in 1894, and sits on a hillside above its own white-sand Blue Flag beach. The hotel was the inspiration for The Sands Hotel in the novels of Rosamunde Pilcher, and Virginia Woolf -- a former guest -- is said to have used Godrevy Lighthouse across the bay as her inspiration for To the Lighthouse.

St Ives -- a "pretty jumble of slate roofs, church towers and turquoise bays" (Lonely Planet), that is home to Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum -- is 20 minutes away by bus. You can also walk into town in about 30 minutes along the South West Coast Path, which runs past the hotel. St Michael's Mount and Penzance are within 25 minutes' drive.

Facilities within the "handsome 125-acre estate" (The Daily Telegraph) include the C Bay Spa, which has a 5-bubble rating from the Good Spa Guide, a heated outdoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a sauna pod and a Ruinart champagne bar. There is also an accredited watersports centre, where you can hire canoes and paddleboards for an extra cost.

The fine-dining Sands Restaurant serves seafood that arrives daily from fishing boats in St Ives, and you can sip a cocktail, cognac or champagne at the bar while watching the sun set over the sea. The Beach Club Restaurant and The Conservatory both serve lighter bites in a more casual environment. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.

We really like its location next to the beach, its relaxed atmosphere and the excellent food.

We didn't get the garden room we were supposed to have and the bedroom we were given was small and stuffy in the summer heat. Our view was of the roof below and the local railway line -which it backed on to- we didn't have to consult the rail timetable as were quickly able to learn it for ourselves as they were quite noisy as they passed by.

Everything was brilliant - premium location, divine food, pianist on 3 evenings out of 4, finding us a convenient parking space, making us feel comfortable..... They could not do enough for us. Stairs can be a problem for people with mobility issues as it is a historical building with a luxurious modern twist, but without us asking they did a room swap with fewer steps and upgraded us from a Superior Room.

I telephoned them on Sunday 4th August to say my husband had been taken into A & E and we would have to cancel. They told me someone would call me back. They didn't. I rang again on Tuesday 6th to ask why no one had called. They said they didn't have a record of my phone call and they had put us down as a 'no show'. That made me really cross. I told them that my husband had a heart attack on Tuesday and would it be possible for a refund. They were very offhand in their manner and they then said 'no they couldn't' and then they said 'as a gesture of goodwill they would keep the £199 on hold for us to put 'towards' a visit another time.' My husband is still in hospital and who knows whether he will be able to drive again so it looks unlikely that we will be going to Cornwall. I think they could at least have refunded for the food that we didn't eat.

Our room was 202 and, whilst the finish was to a high standard, we had to negotiate the limited walking floor space. The angle of the toilet could be challenging for an large statued person. I'm tiny and sat at an angle.
