Carbis Bay Hotel was built in 1894 and is perched on a hillside overlooking its own white-sand Blue Flag beach, which is currently part of a project to extend the hotel. The hotel was the inspiration for The Sands Hotel in the novels of Rosamunde Pilcher, and Virginia Woolf -- a former guest -- is said to have used Godrevy Lighthouse across the bay as her inspiration for To the Lighthouse.

Facilities within the "handsome 125-acre estate" (The Daily Telegraph) include the award-winning C Bay Spa, which boasts a heated outdoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a sauna pod and a Ruinart champagne bar. There is also an accredited watersports centre, where you can hire canoes and paddleboards at an extra cost.

There are three dining options at this hotel. The fine-dining Sands Restaurant serves seafood that arrives daily from fishing boats in St Ives, and you can sip a cocktail, cognac or champagne at the bar, and watch the sun set over the sea. The Beach Club Restaurant and The Conservatory both serve lighter bites in a more casual environment.

St Ives -- with its "pretty jumble of slate roofs, church towers and turquoise bays" (Lonely Planet), home to Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum -- is a 10-minute drive or a 30-minute walk away. The South West Coast Path runs past the front of the hotel, and offers a leisurely walk into the town. Godrevy Lighthouse, St Michael's Mount and Penzance are all within 25 minutes' drive. Wi-Fi is free.

The `first night' evening meal was not available except for 6pm or 8.45pm, so we offered to have Monday and booked for a table by the window. On Monday the head waiter siad they hadn't been told of the request for window so we accepted a mid-room table, no problem really. However, the service was very slow...I noticed our waitress was stood talking to another couple for around 15 mins while we waited for our main course plates to be cleared. My wife spoke to the head waiter about this after offering to go outside so as not to be overheard. We had no apology from him or the waitress (and this is when he told us that no request for a window table was communicated from reception). We informed the duty deputy manager at reception on the way out and, as we saw the head waiter again at breakfast and again as we checked out my wife also again spoke to the duty reception manageress Tuesday he uttered something in passing us at reception. Consequently not a pleasant experinece, my wife was in tears! They say they will offer us an upgrade on next booking.

We were very dissapointed with our bedroom, too noisy to be able to relax & enjoy the location. We booked two nights but only stayed the one night due to the noise!

There were 3 functions at the hotel on the day we arrived and our favourite beach restaurant was closed for a wedding and then 2 functions in the hotel. So guests of hotel were put in another room to eat and not in there lovely conservatory. Too many functions and we were not informed about any of them
