Overview

With its medieval architecture, magnificent cathedral and the countryside of the South Downs within easy reach, Winchester is a great destination for a mini break. The Winchester Royal Hotel is in the centre of town and is the only hotel in the city that has a walled garden -- nicknamed the "secret garden" by locals.

Originally a private house, the property then became a bishop's residence and later a convent, and has been a hotel for the past 150 years.

The Garden Restaurant, which overlooks the walled garden and terrace, serves modern European dishes.

From the hotel, The Great Hall, an atmospheric 13th-century hall featuring a medieval round table linked to King Arthur, is less than 10 minutes' walk away.

Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium is a 15-minute drive away.

we enjoyed our stay. The hotel location is great - we travelled by train and it was only 5-10 mins walk the station and very close to all the city centre attractions. Being an old building the hotel had a lot of character (creaky floorboards etc) that you expect from an old hotelm however didn't have the tatty-ness that sometimes comes with that. Dinner was included in our stayand was very nice. Our only complaint was that the bedroom was very hot, even after we turned own the radiators.

I am disabled and found that the stairs to get up to Room 152 posed quite a problem for me. Informed Reception but they told me tht all t he rooms on the Ground Floor were already booked. When I first booked a room at the hotel a couple of months ago I had told them that me and my partner were both disabled so I think it would have been bettefr had they listened to my request. We also found that having to step up and over into the bath to get a shower proved difficult and somewhat unnerving. I would advise that it would probably be beneficial to have another stair lift going up to rooms on the first floor. You have already got one from outside into the main building and then another from the entrance to the Ground Floor, so, as suggestion, it would be easy enough to just continue that to the First floor
