With its medieval architecture, magnificent cathedral and nearby South Downs countryside, Winchester is a great destination for a mini break. The Winchester Royal Hotel is in the centre of town and is the only hotel in the city that has a walled garden -- nicknamed the "secret garden" by locals.

Originally a private house, the property then became a bishop's residence and later a convent, and has been a hotel for the past 150 years. The Garden Restaurant, which overlooks the walled garden and terrace, serves modern European dishes and has a large collection of local cheeses.

From the hotel, The Great Hall, an atmospheric 13th-century hall featuring a medieval round table linked to King Arthur, is less than 10 minutes' walk away.

Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium is a 15-minute drive away.

The dinner on the first night - excellent despite previous bad comments from the previous weekend when apparently a temporary chef was in house. We'd read the comments on Trip Advisor and were apprehensive but were very pleased with both the service and quality of food.
Other Comments
Only had breakfast one morning which was absolute chaos - asked for orange juice jugs to be refilled, 3 empty fruit bowls, no bread. Eventually replaced, however the waiter and waitress were harassed, told me that "it took time" to refill the fruit (waited at least 5 minutes and when she arrived she only had a bowl of tinned mandarin oranges. No replacement for the other 2 bowls. No bread for toast which the waiter told my husband would "take 7 minutes" to replace. When it arrived, it was warm on the outside but still frozen on the inside! Obviously not microwaved for sufficient time! Tables were not cleared and as we were on a small table for 2, we had to clear the big plates to the vacant table behind us to make enough room for small plates of toast. I can only assume there was a staffing problem. No plain tonic water to go with gin! The bar/lounge area was very dreary with old dirty arms and backs to chairs. Refurbished rooms were good. £10/night to park car extortionate.
