With its medieval architecture, magnificent cathedral and the countryside of the South Downs within easy reach, Winchester is a great destination for a mini break. The Winchester Royal Hotel is in the centre of town and is the only hotel in the city that has a walled garden -- nicknamed the "secret garden" by locals.

Originally a private house, the property then became a bishop's residence and later a convent, and has been a hotel for the past 150 years.

The Garden Restaurant, which overlooks the walled garden and terrace, serves modern European dishes.

From the hotel, The Great Hall, an atmospheric 13th-century hall featuring a medieval round table linked to King Arthur, is less than 10 minutes' walk away.

Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium is a 15-minute drive away.

Dinner menu was disappointing, had to wait 45mins as they forgot our order. Would not pay the dinner prices if I had not got the deal through you. Though to their credit they did give me free parking and a free glass of prosecco. Full english breakfast really good. Only gripe, you have to take off the hotplate lids with nowhere to put them before you to be able to add the food to your plate.

Staff were very polite. Shame they charge for the car park for guests. Would be useful to have a plug socket near the mirror for hair drying.

The bedroom, including the bed, was very comfortable and very peaceful just looking out on to the garden. The lounge and bar area were pleasant and relaxing. Food was of decent quality.
Other Comments
The wait for food in the restaurant on the first night was longer than we would have liked and would have been more acceptable if communication between hotel staff and guest, i.e. us, was better. Also service in general was a bit slow and requests for additional hangers for the room etc could also have been dealt with quicker.

If you want a traditional hotel to use as a base in the centre of Winchester, with the advantage of parking, this is a good hotel for you. Our room was warm, dry, had a comfy bed and was clean and functional, with a power shower, tea and coffee making facilities and complementary water and biscuits. Note though, there was no fridge or safe. The breakfast isn't the highest quality, but it is somewhat endless (buffet, plus cooked stuff on request), so you can fill up before a long walk. Staff were extremely efficient, polite and obliging.
Other Comments
We had dinner included for our first night. It was okay, but not gourmet cuisine.
