Why We Love It
- Excellent setting near London Bridge, the Shard & Borough Market
- Complimentary Wi-Fi in all rooms, some of which were recently refurbished
- Don't worry about sky-high bar prices -- the hotel does not serve alcohol, but guests can bring their own drinks into their rooms
- The hotel was once the setting of Channel 4 series "Hotel GB", featuring Gordon Ramsay & Mary Portas
After being acquired by a new owner in 2014, the Bermondsey Square Hotel underwent a revamp. The ground floor and a number of bedrooms were refurbished, and the decision was made not to sell any alcohol or pork in the restaurant or bar. While this restriction may put some guests off, it really shouldn't. The location is excellent, with London Bridge, Borough Market, the London Dungeon and the Shard all a mere 10/15-minute walk away, while an antiques market is held in the square every Friday. Plus there are plenty of restaurants and bars to explore. You can also bring your own drinks to enjoy in your room (there is a supermarket on the other side of the square), and the hotel is happy to provide ice and glasses.
Some may recognise the property from the TV series "Hotel GB", featuring Gordon Ramsay and Mary Portas. It was also once the site of "Masterchef" host Gregg Wallace's restaurant. Today, GB Grill and Bar restaurant serves food all day, starting with an extensive buffet plus hot food to order from the à la carte menu (turkey bacon and chicken sausages replace the pork varieties). Throughout the day, there are also homemade cakes, pastries and hot and cold (virgin) drinks on offer, and at dinner classics like fish and chips, rotisserie chicken and chips, and beef burgers are on the menu.
The bedrooms are modern and quiet, with good showers, tea- and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi and bottled water. Family rooms also have a pull-out sofa bed for extra guests, and the Terrace rooms have private terraces overlooking the square. Upgrade to a Shard room for impressive views, or to the Lucy Suite, which has its own hot tub with city views.
