Overview

Balmer Lawn Hotel is a 4-star hotel on the edge of Brockenhurst village in the New Forest National Park. One of the largest properties in the area, the hotel is almost a destination in itself. The 19th-century former hunting lodge housed the Canadian army in World War II, and secret D-Day landing documents were found during the 2016 renovation.

The hotel is in a peaceful spot near the Lymington River, with ponies grazing nearby. There are plenty of walking and cycling trails in the local area, and Brockenhurst Manor Golf Club is a 5-minute drive away. Also worth a visit are Beaulieu Motor Museum (a 15-minute drive) and Exbury Gardens & Steam Museum (20 minutes' drive).

There's plenty to keep guests entertained, including an indoor pool, and squash and tennis courts (all free for guests), and a spa that offers treatments (charges apply). The 2-AA-Rosette Beresford's restaurant specialises in modern cooking that makes the most of local ingredients. The terrace is open in fine weather, and Sunday lunch is accompanied by live music until 3:30pm.

The individually decorated rooms offer views of the countryside and cricket pitch, and have free Wi-Fi. Dogs are welcome (charges apply).

the bedroom we were in was small, badly laid out (no mirror by the hairdryer) the plumbing was very noisy and no storage for clothes.

The New Forest location is fabulous.

We were disappointed with our dinner. It was very small portions - I think it was probably 'fine dining' style of food but it did not appeal to us. Also, we had to hang about awkwardly waiting for someone to seat us for breakfast - this situation seemed to be happening to everyone at breakfast as there was no staff to welcome you in to breakfast, we were all at a loss.

Hotel room 39 was a bit tired looking, no bedside lamps and general lighting was strange. Excellent bathroom though.

Good spa facilities and ambience in the bar area.

We specifically asked if sufficient vegetables were included at dinner and we were told 'yes'. However when the meal arrived, it came with only three tiny potato pieces, the size of 10p pieces! As no-one came to ask us if everything was OK we had to summon a waiter ourselves. We were promised action, but when nothing appeared we had to ask again! Finally, after finishing this disappointing celebration meal, they produced a bowl of new potatoes, enough to feed four people! Sadly my wife had severe indigestion all night - she never has it usually! The coat hangers kept falling from their worn plastic runners - and the toilet seat needed realignment!
