Overview

Chilston Park Hotel is a Grade I-listed manor house nestled in private parkland in Kent. With its "fragrant landscape of gentle hills, fertile farmland, cultivated country estates and fruit-laden orchards", the county "isn't described as the garden of England for nothing", says Lonely Planet.

Canterbury, which "tops the charts for English cathedral cities" (Lonely Planet), is around 35 minutes' drive from the hotel. You can explore the medieval city's narrow alleyways, riverside gardens and ancient city walls. The "fairy-tale stronghold" (Fodor's) of Leeds Castle -- a favourite home of many medieval English queens -- is just 10 minutes' drive away.

The Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a hotspot for walking, cycling and horse riding. It is home to Belmont House (open April-September) and its gardens (open year-round), which are 25 minutes' drive from the hotel. National Trust properties Ightham Mote and Knole House, as well as Lullingstone Castle, are within 45 minutes' drive.

This hotel is replete with antiques and traditional furnishings, and the restaurant, Culpeper's, holds two AA Rosettes. The AA says, "the kitchen deals in modern British cooking clearly rooted in the classics but with some inventive combinations".

Bedrooms are individually designed and are located in the coach house, stables, cottage and manor house. Wi-Fi is free.

I telephoned the hotel and though not obliged to do so they have postponed our dinner and stay until it is safe to go ahead. Really grateful to them.

Chilston is a beautiful place to unwind the busy stresses of life. Peace and tranquility I find here whether it's a walk through the grounds or staying in a the homely manor room or mews room. I have now become a member as I entend to enjoy Chilsten on a more frequent basis. Thank you to all the staff for making my stay pleasant each time I visit or stay.
